Dr. Brian S. Biesman Receives His 2nd Award for Excellence in Laser Medicine
from the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery
Dr. Biesman is the only physician in the Southeast region ever honored by the Society
Nashville, TN -- Brian S. Biesman, MD, FACS, Director of the Nashville Centre for Laser and Facial
Surgery, has received the 2012 Ellet H. Drake Award from the American Society for Laser Medicine and
Surgery, Inc. (ASLMS), honoring him for his significant contributions in the use of lasers for patient care, in laser
research and in teaching other physicians best practices in laser medicine. Dr. Biesman is the only physician in
the Southeast region to have ever been honored by ASLMS and is one of only seven physicians in the world to
have ever received two awards from ASLMS. In 2010, Dr. Biesman received the Society’s Leon Goldman
Memorial Award, named in honor of the "father of laser medicine," and presented to someone who has made
a significant contribution to the field of laser science, technology and medicine.
“I’m particularly proud to receive recognition for the second time from my colleagues in the field of
laser medicine” said Dr. Biesman, who is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Vanderbilt University Medical Center,
Nashville, TN, where he holds appointments in the Divisions of Ophthalmology, Dermatology and
Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery.
“During my career it has been extremely gratifying to have played a part in developing medical
applications for laser technology that can potentially benefit millions of patients worldwide,” noted Dr.
Biesman, who is also a Clinical Associate Professor at The University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center,
Memphis, TN.
The 2012 Ellet H. Drake Award will be presented to Dr. Biesman at the 32nd Annual Conference of the
American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, April 18-22, 2012, at the Gaylord Palms Resort and
Convention Center, Kissimmee, FL.
Dr. Biesman specializes in laser and facial surgery with a focus on eyelid plastic and reconstructive
surgery and technology-based rejuvenation procedures. His current research interests include technologybased cutaneous rejuvenation, novel approaches to noninvasive tissue tightening, transcutaneous and
minimally invasive lipolysis, soft tissue volume augmentation for facial rejuvenation, transcutaneous delivery
of botulinum toxin, technology-based modification of facial muscles, laser-enhanced drug delivery, home-use
lasers and light devices, advances in ablative fractional skin resurfacing, cutaneous repigmentation, and low
level light therapy for photorejuvenation.
Dr. Biesman received both his undergraduate degree (1984) and medical degree (1988) from the
University of Michigan where he graduated with high honors. He completed his Ophthalmology residency at
the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary before fellowship training in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at
Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital in New York, NY.

Upon completion of his fellowship, Dr. Biesman returned to Chicago where he served as Chief Resident
in the Department of Ophthalmology in the University of Illinois Eye Center, The University of Illinois Eye and
Ear Infirmary.
During his medical career, Dr. Biesman has served as Director of the Eye Plastics and Orbit Service and
the Center for Aesthetic Eyelid and Facial Surgery at the New England Medical Center, and as Assistant
Professor of Ophthalmology at Tufts University School of Medicine. He has held faculty appointments in the
Division of Otolaryngology at the New England Medical Center and the Divisions of Dermatology and Plastic
and Reconstructive Surgery at the Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. In 1998, he moved to
Nashville.
Dr. Biesman is a member of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS) and
currently serves as its Laser Safety Officer. He served as President of ASLMS from 2008-2009. He is also a
member of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the Tennessee Society for
Laser Medicine and Surgery, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Medical Association.
He is an Honorary Member of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery. He sits on numerous corporate
advisory boards and holds positions on the editorial boards of Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, Cosmetic
Dermatology, and other industry publications.
He is a noted local, national and international speaker whose research is directed toward broadening
the use of lasers and other technology-based devices in minimally invasive rejuvenation options. His
breakthrough studies have garnered him extensive exposure in the national and local media. An accomplished
author of many scientific papers, Dr. Biesman has written a textbook on the use of lasers in cosmetic and
reconstructive surgery.
Dr. Biesman was named to Best Doctors in America in 2005-2006, 2007-2008, 2009-2010 and 20112012. A long-time resident of Nashville, Dr. Biesman is affiliated with numerous area hospitals and was the
