Lesson Title: Building up earth’s surface
Common Core Standards: Process and Inquiry 2; Std 3: Structure of the Earth and Solar System. Interaction between air, water, rock/soil, and all
living things; 1,2 a – Earth/Space Science S3
Lesson Objectives: The student will read about how forces such as deposition and volcanic activity build up Earth’s surface features through
articles and pictures with captions.
Key Vocabulary: deposition
Materials/Resources/Technology: Learn by Reading: building up Earth’s Surface handout, WW strip with deposition
Anticipatory Set / APK =20%: introduce new word: deposition, write definition on board and do WW chants for repetition
Direct Instruction / TIP =20%: Read paragraph about deposition, share pictures of examples and talk about the captions
 Guided Practice: watch Rock and Learn Earth Science video: segment 4 (18 min)
Independent Practice / SAP =45%: students answer the following questions with a partner and use available resources if needed: Why is
sediment deposited over the slope of a riverbed as is levels out? And “What are some destructive forces we may experience in our area that
other areas of the Earth may not?” share answers with class for discussion when finished
Closure / Summary =15%: review WW words and add to academic folder
Assessment: study page 36 – vocab and mult choice over today’s reading – turn in for a grade
Wednesday
Lesson Title: Model a Map
Common Core Standards: Process and Inquiry 2; Std 3: Structure of the Earth and Solar System. Interaction between air, water, rock/soil, and all
living things; 1,2 a – Earth/Space Science S3
Lesson Objectives: Student will gain a deeper understanding of contour lines and a topographic map by doing a short investigative project
using modeling clay.
Key Vocabulary: contour, topographic map
Materials/Resources/Technology: modeling clay, plastic knives, dental floss, paper plate
Anticipatory Set / APK =20%: review vocab and why we use topo maps
Direct Instruction / TIP =20%: introduce what project will entail and pass out materials to groups
 Guided Practice: show how to manipulate clay and all safety procedures
Independent Practice / SAP =45%: students perform project with teacher monitoring
Closure / Summary =15%: allow groups to share their finished product
Assessment: students write a paragraph as to how topo maps are helpful when trying to learn and observe the earth’s crust and its features
Monitor or Adjust: as needed throughout project
Thursday
Lesson Title: Review and Test Prep
Common Core Standards: Process and Inquiry 2; Std 3: Structure of the Earth and Solar System. Interaction between air, water, rock/soil, and all
living things; 1,2 a – Earth/Space Science S3
Lesson Objectives: Students will review for their test tomorrow.
Key Vocabulary: contour lines, crust, deposition, erosion, sediment, topographic map, weathering
Materials/Resources/Technology: science book page C34 review and test prep; cause and effect chart, unit resource folder
Anticipatory Set / APK =20%: read extreme science master of erosion from page C30 then watch Science rocks video chapter weathering and
erosion
Direct Instruction / TIP =20%: fill out cause and effect chart from unit resource folder as students follow along and stop for student questioning;
students guide the cause and effect using lesson three C24
 Guided Practice: complete SGB page 19 from lesson three together at Elmo
Independent Practice / SAP =45%: Review and Test Prep page C32 1-14; students complete independently
Closure / Summary =15%: answer/grade ind practice together to use as a study guide
Assessment: review and test prep page/tomorrows test
