Mathematical Processes & Applications
I can use maths in my class work.
 I show my work with objects or pictures and can talk about it
 I know and can continue a simple pattern.

1
I can choose the maths I use in some activities.
I can talk about my work using mathematical words.
 I am beginning to represent it using symbols and simple diagrams.
 I can explain why an answer is correct.

2

I try different methods and find ways of solving problems.
 I am beginning to organise my work and check results.
 I can discuss my work and am beginning to explain my thinking.
 I can use and interpret mathematical symbols and diagrams.
 I can show that I understand a general statement by finding particular examples that match it.

3
Grade F/G
I can develop my own strategies for solving problems.
 I can use these strategies in maths and in applying maths to practical contexts.
 I can present information and results in a clear and organised way.
 I can search for a solution by trying out my own ideas.

4
Grade F/E
I can identify and obtain necessary information to complete tasks and solve problems.
 I check my results are sensible.
 I can understand situations by describing them mathematically using symbols, words and diagrams.
 I can draw my own simple conclusions and give an explanation of my reasoning.

5
Grade E/F
I can solve difficult tasks and solve quite complex problems by breaking them down into smaller tasks on my own.
I can interpret, discuss and synthesise information presented in a different mathematical forms.
 My writing explains and informs my use of diagrams.
 I am beginning to give mathematical justifications.


Grade D

If I am given a task I can extend or develop the task in order to generate fuller solutions.
I am able to make relevant use of some algebra and ICT when solving a problem
 I can give reasons for my choice of mathematical presentation and can explain features I have selected.
 I can justify my generalisations, arguments or solutions, showing some insight into the mathematical structure of
the problem.
 I can appreciate the difference between mathematical explanation and experimental evidence.


7
Grade C
I can develop and follow alternative approaches.
 I can reflect on my own lines of enquiry when exploring mathematical tasks.
 I can convey mathematical or statistical meaning through the consistent use of algebra and relevant use of ICT
that is sustained throughout my work.
 I can examine generalisations or solutions reached in an activity, commenting constructively on the reasoning and
logic or the process employed, or the results obtained, and make further progress in the activity as a result.

L8
Grade B
I can examine critically the strengths and weaknesses of different strategies considering the elegance and
efficiency of an approach.
 I can apply mathematics in a wide range of both familiar and unfamiliar contexts
 I can use mathematical language and symbols effectively in presenting a convincing, reasoned argument
 I can produce reports that include mathematical justifications, distinguishing between evidence and proof and
explaining their solutions to problems involving a number of features or variables.
