PIECES, MEASURE, WEIGHT ENTRY

1.1

Overview

The Pieces, Measure, Weight (PMW) entry is a standard STRATIX application control used for the entry of Pieces, Measure and Weight in all transactions that require it.

1.1.1

Modes of Entry

The PMW control supports add, change and inquiry modes.

Add mode is used when a new transaction is being created and the Pieces, Measure and Weight are entered for the first time.

Change mode is used when modifying a transaction. The original Pieces, Measure and Weight are presented to the user for modification.

Inquiry mode is used to display the contents of a transaction’s Pieces, Measure and Weight fields without providing access for modification of the values.

1.1.2

Default Values

In Add mode, all of the fields default to zeros.

In Change and Inquiry mode, the calling transaction supplies the current values for the fields.

1.1.3

Calling Application Control

The following features of the PMW control are optional as required by the applications that use it.

Access to the Weight UM field is optional depending on the requirements of the calling transaction.

The following combinations are possible:

 Pieces, Measure, Weight and Weight UM are accessible.

 Pieces, Measure and Weight but not Weight UM are accessible.

 Pieces, Measure, Weight output only but Weight UM is accessible.

Display of the Measure UM.

The Transaction Entry Measure (English/Metric) is controlled by the calling application.

Use of the Pieces, Measure, Weight Preferences.

Specifications for the Control

1.2.1

General Rules

The behavior of the PMW control and access to its fields is based on the characteristics of the transaction’s Product and the options set for this control. The Field Specification table below identifies the conditions of each field.

1.2.2

Computations

Automatic computation of theoretical Pieces, Measure and Weight is an integral part of the PMW control.

Options have been created which allow each STRATIX site to control some of the computations. These options are discussed in detail below.

Note that all computations take place using the Base Measure and results are shown using the transaction measure. For example, if a Sales Order Item is entered using a Metric Measure for an

English site, all computations are performed internally in English and re-converted to Metric for display.

Please also see the computation examples at the end of the document.

1.2.2.1

__ Actual vs. Theoretical Pieces, Measure and Weight Type

The Pieces Type, Measure Type Weight Type and Coil Length Type fields prevent automatic recomputation of the respective field. In Change mode, the Type fields are passed from the calling application and are optionally displayed with the respective field.

For some applications, such as Purchase Order Item entry and Sales Order Item Entry, the Type fields are not stored. They default to Theoretical and are not saved when the new or adjusted quantity is committed to the database.

The user has the option to zero out the Pieces, Measure and Weight fields and reset their contents to zero. This function is triggered via a Clear icon in the PMW control.

Both Add and Change mode support all computations.

1.2.2.2

__ Automatic Computations

The following computations are provided by default in the PMW control.

** Note that the affected fields are only recomputed when their respective Type is Theoretical.

Changed Field

Pieces

Measure

Weight

Affected Field

Measure (or Coil Length) from Pieces.

Weight from Measure (or Coil Length)

Coil Length (if applicable)

These computations can be done in one of two ways:

Theoretical

For most applications, computations are made based on the specified dimensions and the theoretical weight factors (Material Density or Product Theoretical Weight).

This is the default method for all Pieces, Measure and Weight computations.

Actual

The exception is the Reservations application. An execution option called Pieces, Measure, Weight

Computation method allows for the computations to be done based on the quantity available in stock.

It is used for installations where the inventory Measure and Weight are ‘actual’ (not theoretical).

When the option is set to Actual, the reservation application computes Pieces, Measure and Weight based on the portion of the total available quantity being reserved.

Pieces are computed based on prorated weight. Pieces = (Res Wgt/Avl Wgt) * Avl Pieces

Measure is computed based on prorated pieces. Measure = (Res Pcs/Avl Pcs) * Avl Measure

Weight is computed based on prorated measure. Weight = (Res Msr/Avl Msr) * Avl Weight

Where Measure does not apply, Weight is computed based on pro-rated Pieces (Res Pcs/Avl Pcs) *

Avl Weight

Example: Available from stock are 10 pieces of bar angle with an actual weight of 700lbs. If 5 pieces are reserved for shipment, the reservations application will compute a reserved weight of

350 LBS and not 319 LBS (the theoretical weight of 5 pieces).

1.2.2.3

__ Computation for Coils

In transactions that create Product Items, the Coil Length replaces the Measure field. This provides for the ability to compute the Theoretical Weight for a coil.

The Coil Length field behaves the same way as the Measure field with a few exceptions.

The Theoretical Weight is computed as a function of the Actual Coil Length and Actual Pieces.

The Coil Length does not reflect the number of Pieces, it is the length per coil.

The Theoretical Coil Length (per piece) is computed as a function of the Actual Weight and Actual

Pieces.

For all other transactions, the Coil Length is not supplied and the Theoretical Weight is not computed.

1.2.2.4

__ Computations for Random Products

In applications that support the entry of quantity for random plate, the theoretical Measure is computed based on the area per piece of random plate and not the area of the nominal dimensions.

This applies to L plate, circles and rings.

Example 1

A Purchase Order Item is entered for 10 pieces of an L-plate has the following rectangles. 48x76,

12x20, 12x96.

The area per piece is computed as (48 * 76) + (12 * 20) = 3888 sq in. = 27 square feet.

The theoretical measure is 27 * 10 = 270 square feet.

Example 2

A Sales Order Item is entered for 20 circles with an OD of 24”.

The area per piece is computed as 3.1415 * 12 2 = 452 sq in = 3.14 square feet.

The theoretical measure is 3.14 * 20 = 62.8 square feet.

1.2.2.5

__ Optional Computations

Options are available for controlling some of the computations that take place in the PMW control.

Each of these options is described in detail below.

* When Pieces is changed, the Weight is computed directly from the Pieces where the Inventory

Control Method is Units and Dimension Segregation is No Dimension.

The options are set at both the system level and the user level. Each application that makes use of the

PMW control must indicate the source of these options. One or the other can be selected but not both.

When the user level is used, an Options icon is displayed to give the user access to the Program Options function. The control is resized if the icon is hidden.

The User options are saved by application and user when the user presses the [Save] button on the options window.

If the user does not save (by pressing the [OK] button on the options window), then the options are in effect until the form that uses the P, M, W control is closed. The options are reset from the database in subsequent calls to the same form.

Compute Pieces

Automatic computation of Pieces from Weight when Pieces is theoretical.

Not computed where the Product – Piece Control Required field is No

Note that if the Compute Pieces Option is No then the Pieces are computed internally for the purposes of Measure computations only (the computed Pieces are not returned).

Round Pieces

Controls the type of rounding used when the Pieces are computed and the result is not an integer.

Options are:

 Truncate decimals of a Piece.

 Increases the Pieces up to the next highest piece.

 Round the Pieces to the nearest whole Piece using standard rounding logic.

Round Measure (or Coil Length)

This provides an option to round the Measure field for any product.

Options are

 No rounding

 Truncates inches or decimals of a meter.

 Increases the Measure up to the next highest foot or meter.

 Rounds the Measure to the nearest whole foot or meter using standard rounding logic.

The rounding is always performed using the Base Measure UM.

 Example

Base measure is English, entry Measure is Metric

Round Measure is set to Round Up.

Enter 2.4 meters for a 1.25 meter bar angle.

‘Pieces’ is computed as 2 pieces, equivalent measure is 2.5 meters.

2.5 meters is 8’ 2.425”

The 8’ 2.425” is rounded to 9’

STRATIX Page

8

 9’ is 2.74 meters. The measure field is shown as 2.74 meters.

Compute Measure from Weight

If Measure is applicable to the Product it is always computed when the Weight is changed and the

Measure is Theoretical. This preference controls whether the Measure is computed from the

Weight or from the Pieces when the Weight is changed.

Example: Compute Measure from Weight is Yes.

A Product weighs 2 LBS/FT. Length is 20’ per piece.

Enter 5 Pieces. Msr = 100’. Weight = 200 LBS

Change the Weight to 210 LBS.

Compute Measure as 105’.

NOTE

If the user changes the Weight field and both Compute Pieces and Compute Measure from Weight are Yes, then the logic for Compute Pieces is applied first. Then the logic for Compute Measure from

Weight is applied and the Measure is recalculated to balance it with the new Weight field.

1.2.3

Actual vs Theoretical Verification

For some applications that use the PMW control, a verification of an entered Actual Weight is required.

This verification ensures that the Actual Weight entered is close enough to the Theoretical Weight to prevent keying errors by operators.

The Allowed variance is configured using the Theoretical Variance Execution Option. The Execution

Option is set by application.

If the verification fails, a warning message is issued and the user is allowed to continue.

If the computed Theoretical Weight is zero then the verification is skipped. This could occur because the Theoretical Weight cannot be computed (because of the Product’s attributes e.g. coil) or the Pieces or Measure is zero.
