CHILD INFLUENZA VACCINATION
The Department of Health has recommended that the routine annual flu immunisation programme
be extended to all children born between 2/9/2009 and 1/9/2012. For most children the vaccine is
given as a simple nasal spray – no injections are involved.
Please telephone the Surgery to book an appointment. If you do not wish your child to have the
vaccination, please let us know so that we can enter this on their record.
SHINGLES
90% of all adults raised in the UK have had chickenpox. After chickenpox, the virus stays inside
your body and can recur as shingles later in life. Even those people who had a mild case of
chickenpox as a child or didn’t have any obvious symptoms may still be at risk of developing
shingles.
Although not everyone develops shingles, as we get older our immune system weakens which
increases the chance of getting shingles. Unfortunately shingles in older people tends to be more
severe than in younger people. The Department of Health have introduced a recommendation that
the shingles vaccine be routinely offered to people born between 2/9/1934 and 1/9/1935 and
2/9/1943 and 1/9/1944.
You can find more information about shingles by visiting www.shinglesaware.co.uk
TRAVEL VACCINATIONS
If you are planning a holiday overseas, please complete the online Travel Questionnaire via our
website or obtain a copy from Reception at least 6 weeks prior to travel. Each questionnaire will
be checked by the Nurse and you are advised to contact the surgery 3-4 days later for details of
your individual requirements. Please note that there is a charge for some vaccinations.

FRIENDS & FAMILY SURVEY
From 1 January, if you visit our GP surgery you will be asked about whether or not you would
recommend our surgery to your family and friends. The results are anonymous. Please visit the
home page of our website www.oliverstreetsurgery.co.uk to give your feedback.
The Friends and Family test results will be published on the Bedfordshire Clinical Commissioning
Group website at www.bedfordshireccg.nhs.uk
The information will give our GP practice invaluable feedback on what you think of the care and
treatment you have received, which along with existing ways of gathering feedback, will help us to
make improvements and improve the experience for our patients.
The Friends and Family Test has already been successfully rolled out in hospitals across the
country and is proving to be valuable in obtaining patient experiences. For more information on the
Friends and Family Test, please visit www.nhs.uk/friendsandfamily.
NHS HEALTH CHECKS
We offer a free Health Check for all patients between the ages of 40 and 74 who have not been
diagnosed with heart disease, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease or stroke. The check includes a
blood test followed by a 20 minute appointment with the Nurse approximately 1 week later. Please
make an appointment so that we can offer advice on how to improve your health.
NAMED GP FOR OVER 75s
All GP practices are required to provide patients over 75 with details of their named GP who will
have overall responsibility for the care and support provided by the surgery. This does not prevent
you from seeing a GP of your choice.
