JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: Teaching Assistant LOCATION: UTC Cambridge, Robinson Way, Cambridge SALARY: £16,000 per annum HOURS OF WORK: 40 hours per week RESPONSIBLE TO: SENCo RESPONSIBLE FOR: Work closely with teaching staff at UTC Cambridge to support the needs of students. To help students achieve their full potential by further developing their academic and technical skills. OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB To complement the professional work of teachers by providing learning support to enhance the development, education and achievement of identified students. To work collaboratively with teaching staff (in curriculum areas and across UTC Cambridge) and other support staff to develop an inclusive and supportive learning environment. To meet the specific needs of individual students, or a small group of students, as directed by teaching staff. To assess the needs of students and use appropriate strategies to increase their access to the curriculum. To liaise with all relevant staff to support students’ progress and overall development. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Under guidance of the teacher in charge to plan and prepare teaching resources that account for SEND students’ learning needs. To act as a role model and setting high expectations in terms of professional attitude and conduct. To monitor students and assess, record and report student progress and development. To promote the inclusion and acceptance of all students in UTC Cambridge by identifying barriers to learning and developing strategies to overcome these. To encourage students to work co-operatively and ensure that they understand and are able to following UTC Cambridge’s Behaviour and Learning policies. To develop an understanding of the student tracking systems that are used across UTC Cambridge and to contribute to the assessment of learners and to feedback and record the achievements and progress of students. To support the delivery of local and national learning strategies e.g. literacy, numeracy and make effective use of opportunities provided by other learning activities to support the development of students’ skills To use and prepare specialist equipment, plans and resources necessary to support learning activities, taking into account student’s interests, language and cultural backgrounds To work with small groups of student’s in mixed ability groupings ensuring that they understand tasks and learning objectives To use ICT effectively to support learning activities and develop students’ competence and independence in its use Ensure that senior staff, the line manager and relevant teaching staff and pastoral heads are kept informed about each student’s progress and that all support is in line with UTC Cambridge’s expectations, policies and practice Maintain regular contact, where appropriate, with families of target group students to keep them informed of the student’s progress. Secure positive family support and involvement in the student’s education. Other Specific Duties To continue personal professional development as required. Attend staff and other meetings and participate in staff training and development events as required. To actively engage in the performance review process. All support staff may be used to perform appropriate duties as and when required by UTC Cambridge. To adhere to UTC Cambridge’s policies and procedures with particular reference to Child Protection, Equal Opportunities, Teaching and Learning and Health and Safety. Provide relevant and appropriate pastoral support. Lead by example and set a professional tone for behaviour, both as a role model and by supporting the culture of respect and dignity between students and colleagues. Understand the Safeguarding requirements of UTC Cambridge and ensure compliance with the policy. The person undertaking this role is expected to work within the policies, ethos and aims of UTC Cambridge, to carry out such other duties as may reasonably be assigned by the Principal, and to play a full part in the life of UTC Cambridge supporting its distinctive mission and encouraging staff and students to do the same. Learning Mentor Personal Specification Essential Qualifications Experience Knowledge and Understanding Personal Qualities Desirable A full level 3 qualification (i.e. three A levels, BTec National Diploma or equivalent) Level 4 qualification Proficient use of technology, (PC, internet, MS Office suites) and understanding its use in supporting effective teaching and learning. Basic experience of planning, either for lessons or for extra-curricular activities. Basic experience of assessing student progress and contributing to assessment progress. Experience of covering small groups or classes. Experience as a mentor. Experience working with young people. Experience working in an area relevant to our specialties. Knowledge of different teaching and learning styles and understanding of how these could be applied to students. Strategies for working with students, parents and multi-agency partners.
