Bearings and Scale Drawings
Before you attempt the scale drawing, draw a sketch for each question.
1)
A ship heads out to sea, from port, on a bearing of 075 degrees for 6 Km and then
on a bearing of 120degrees for 7 Km. Using a scale of 1 cm : 1 Km, construct a
scale drawing of this journey. Use this scale drawing to find:
i)
the bearing on which the ship has to head to return to port.
ii)
The actual distance the ship is from port
2)
A plane flies from the airport on a bearing of 130 degrees for 11 Km and then on a
bearing of 055 degrees for 12.4 Km. Using a scale of 1 cm : 2 Km, construct this as
a scale drawing. Use this scale drawing to find:
i)
the bearing on which the plane has to fly to return to the airport.
ii)
The actual distance the plane is from the airport.
3)
A yacht heads out onto a lake, from the jetty, on a bearing of 042 degrees for 660 m
and then on a bearing of 115 degrees for 750 m. Using a scale of 1 cm : 100 m,
construct this as a scale drawing. Use this scale drawing to find:
i)
the bearing on which the yacht has to head to return to the jetty.
ii)
The actual distance the yacht is from the jetty.
4)
A jeep heads out into the desert, from base camp, on a bearing of 131 degrees for
56 Km and then on a bearing of 057 degrees for 95 Km. Using a scale of 1 cm : 10
Km, construct a scale drawing of this journey. Use this scale drawing to find:
i)
the bearing on which the jeep has to head to return to base camp.
ii)
The actual distance the jeep is from base camp.
5)
A helicopter flies from the helipad on a bearing of 026 degrees for 12.8 Km, and then
on a bearing of 104 degrees for 20 Km. Using a scale of 1 cm : 2 Km, construct a
scale drawing of this journey. Use this scale drawing to find:
i)
the bearing on which the helicopter has to fly to return to the helipad.
ii)
The actual distance the helicopter is from the helipad.
6)
An ant crawls out of its ant hole and walks on a bearing of 110 degrees for 74 m and
then on a bearing of 045 degrees for 90 m. Using a scale of 1 cm : 10 m, construct
this as a scale drawing. Use this scale drawing to find:
i)
the bearing on which the ant has to walk to return to the ant hole.
ii)
The actual distance the ant is from the ant hole.
7)
A boat heads out to sea, from port, on a bearing of 121 degrees for 32.8 Km and
then on a bearing of 037 degrees for 35.2 Km. Using a scale of 1 cm : 4 Km,
construct this as a scale drawing. Use the scale drawing to find:
i)
the bearing on which the boat has to head to return to port.
ii)
The actual distance the boat is from port.
8)
Santa skis away from his igloo on a bearing of 070 degrees for 35 Km and then on a
bearing of 300 degrees for 55 Km. Using a scale of 1 cm : 5 Km, construct this as a
scale drawing. Use the scale drawing to find:
i)
the bearing on which Santa has to ski to return to his igloo.
ii)
The actual distance Santa is from the igloo.
9)
A helicopter flies from the helipad on a bearing of 040 degrees for 700 Km, and then
on a bearing of 290 degrees for 700 Km. Using a scale of 1 cm : 100 Km, construct
this as a scale drawing. Use this scale drawing to find:
i)
the bearing on which the helicopter has to fly to return to the helipad.
ii)
The actual distance the helicopter is from the helipad
10)
A whale heads out to sea, from a port, on a bearing of 300 degrees for 600 km and
then on a bearing of 085 degrees for 1100 km. Using a scale of 1cm : 100km,
construct this as a scale drawing. Use the scale drawing to find:
i)
the bearing on which the whale has to head to return to port.
ii)
The actual distance the whale is from the port.
11)
A mouse crawls out of its nest and walks on a bearing of 062 degrees for 115 m and
then on a bearing of 200 degrees for 60 m. Using a scale of 1 cm : 10 m, construct
this as a scale drawing. Use the scale drawing to find:
i)
the bearing on which the mouse has to head to return to the nest.
ii)
The actual distance the mouse is from its nest.
12)
A jeep heads out into the desert, from base camp, on a bearing of 300 degrees for
360 km and then on a bearing of 210 degrees for 300 km. Using a scale of
1 cm : 50 km, construct a scale drawing of this journey. Use the scale drawing to
find:
i)
the bearing on which the jeep has to head to return to base camp.
ii)
