1) National Night Out Events – Tuesday, August 5th
The following is the schedule of national night out events to be held at various
locations in the 3rd District. We hope you can attend one of the events.
Commander Jones, Lt. Felsen and Lt. Daniel will all be out in the caravans, along
with our motorcycle escort to visit this year’s events.
National Night Out, celebrated by police departments across the nation,
is a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National
Association of Town Watch (NATW). The Police Departments’ goal is to heighten
safety and crime prevention awareness; to support locally-based businesses,
groups, and organizations; and to strengthen relationships among community
members and between the community and local police department.

The Takoma Police Department event is free, so bring your whole family and invite all your
friends! This year’s event will include informational brochures on
various safety topics and crime prevention, food, games, give-aways, and
more. There will be police vehicles on display, officers and their
horses from the Park Police mounted division, a canine demonstration,
child fingerprint kits & child fingerprinting, a moon bounce, face
painting, Kona Ice, food & ice cream… just to name a few! Did I mention
that the event is FREE?

b) Montgomery County jail’s jobs program to be national
model

c) The Annie E. Casey Foundation has just released the 25th edition of its “Kids Count”
data book, which measures the well-being of children nationwide across a variety of
health, economic, educational, and community measures. According to the report, the
2000s have seen major setbacks in children’s welfare across a wide spectrum of
indicators.

d) Video: “Why Youth Join Gangs”
This video presentation features gang researchers, practitioners, and young people who were
previously involved in gangs. Learn about research regarding gang joining, as well as firsthand
insights into the behaviors and the circumstances that you might observe when interacting with
youth who are at high risk of joining a gang.
