SOC 310 Service Learning and Community Praxis (4 credits) Dr. Braa
Students will propose and conduct a volunteer service project that helps disadvantaged
members of a community.
 Students meet once with instructor, then do service of choice at location of choice. This is
not an on campus course. See Dr. Braa for details.
 No prerequisites (mistake in catalog).
SOC 338 Sociology of the Family (4) MTWR 9:40-11:10 Bellamy 108 Dr. Dolan
 This course provides an introduction to sociological perspectives on the family. We will
examine the impact of historical changes in the economy and other social institutions on
family structure. Special topics include gender and power, diversity, and violence in
families.
SOC 225D Social Problems (4) MTWR 1:00-2:30 HWC 203 Dr. Braa
 Survey of social problems such as poverty, racism, sexism, environment, deviant
behavior, work, globalization, and problems in education. Award winning films are
significant part of the course.
SOC 354 Sociology of Deviant Behavior (4) MTWR 11:20-12:50 HWC 105 Dr. Callero
 Examines the historical, cultural, political and economic forces that contribute to the
social construction of deviance. Particular attention is given to strategies of social control
deployed by those with power.
SOC 406 Latin American Film (4) MTWR 11:20-12:50 Bellamy 108 Dr. Dolan
This class will address Latin American social issues through the analysis of films from
Mexico, Chile, Cuba, Bolivia, El Salvador, Argentina and Brazil. We will use cinema
AS TEXT to examine Latin American social history as from the colonial period to
the return to progressive reform governments. Topics will include revolution, dictatorships, human rights, globalization, land reform, indigenous rights, and social movements.
