Painting & Sculpture Mrs. Brown/Ms. Provo-Parker/Mrs. Concascia Corrugated Cardboard Relief Sculpture Inspired by the work of Mark Langan http://www.langanart.com/ Materials: Recycled corrugated cardboard, x-acto knife, hot glue gun/glue bottle/glue stick, sand paper Step 1: Experiment with the cardboard. How many different ways can you alter the surface? How will you manipulate the material? Relief Sculpture: any work in which the subject projects from a background, meant to be seen from the front Subtractive processes: cut all the way through, cut through the top layer and peel off to expose the corrugated layer, cut off the top layer and remove the corrugated layer to leave the bottom, peel just the surface off of the top layer to change the texture and value slightly. Additive process: Glue on cut out pieces, glue on pieces from other cardboard, glue on just the paper layers, glue on just the corrugated layers Step 2: Create a design for your image. Complete 3 sketches in your sketchbook with a general layout. The minimum size of your design is 9X9 inches, but you can work much larger. Ideas to consider when designing your image: What direction do you want the corrugated layer to run (horizontally or vertically) in your design? Do you want your image to be abstract or representative of another image? Do you want your design to be symmetrically balanced (the same on both sides) or asymmetrically balanced (different on each side)? What overall shape will the corrugated cardboard sculpture be, square, rectangle, organic, etc.? Keep in mind a variety of sizes, shapes and directions create interest and repetition of shapes, sizes and directions create unity to a piece of artwork. Step 3: Cut out your cardboard piece. Sketch your design onto the piece of cardboard. As you are working, you may find that your design evolves. This is a natural part of the artistic process. Step 4: Create your final design. Some ideas to keep in mind: Cut away from your hand and body! Do not put your hand/fingers in front of the cutting hand/knife! Cut through the layers slowly. You will be able to get a more defined edge, especially with curves if you make multiple passes with the xacto knife. If you only want to remove the top layer, score the cardboard with the x-acto knife and gently peel the paper away. If you want to expose the corrugated layer, you will need to use the x-acto knife to remove the excess paper.
