Welcome to Saint Mary’s High School French Immersion. We are a growing program that offers
exceptional French language education throughout the 4 years that students are with us. In
order to accommodate the small class sizes in the French Immersion program we follow a 2year cycle, as follows:
Grades 9 & 10
Year 1
French Immersion French (FIF1DZ)
This course provides opportunities for
students to speak and interact in French
independently in a variety of real-life and
personally relevant contexts. Students will
develop their skills in listening, speaking,
reading, and writing, as well their ability to
communicate in French with confidence, by
using language learning strategies introduced
in the elementary French Immersion program.
Students will enhance their knowledge of the
French language through the study of French
Canadian literature. They will also increase
their understanding and appreciation of
diverse French-speaking communities, and will
develop skills necessary for lifelong language
learning. This course helps students to
communicate and learn in light of gospel
values and to use and integrate the Catholic
faith tradition in everyday work.

opportunities to communicate, interact, and
think critically and creatively in French.
Students will use a variety of language

texts. Students will develop their knowledge
of the French language through the study of
contemporary French literature and

Religious Education - Be With Me (HRE1OZ)
This course invites students to a deeper
understanding of both the joy and the
demands of following in the way of Christ and
living out the call to discipleship as it is
described in the Scriptures. Through a lens
filtered by Scripture, Profession of Faith,
Christian Moral Development, Prayer,
Sacramental Life, and Family Life, students use
the Beatitudes as a touchstone to examine the
attitudes and actions that characterize the
Christian life. Students will explore a variety of
topics related to the themes of personhood,
interpersonal relationships and sexuality. They
are encouraged to understand and nurture
within themselves the virtues which will
enable them to deepen their relationship with
God in and through Christ in the context of a
Spirit-filled community.

Issues in Canadian Geography (CGC1DZ)
This course examines interrelationships within
and between Canada’s natural and human
systems and how these systems interconnect

This course invites and challenges the
adolescent to personalize the principles that
guide Catholics in understanding their role in
shaping culture through our discipleship. The
exploration of these principles starts with the
Scriptural foundations to the questions of
what it means to be human and how God has
and continues to shape our humanity through
culture. The principles are then developed
through the Gospel themes that reveal how
Jesus’ Kingdom of God is expressed in all of
our relationships: to ourselves, to others, to
our civil society, to our Church, and to our
Global community.

Canadian History Since World War I (CHC2DZ)
This course explores the local, national, and
global forces that have shaped Canada’s
national identity from World War I to the
present. Students will investigate the

democratic society. Students will explore
issues of civic importance such as healthy
schools, community planning, environmental
responsibility, and the influence of social
media, while developing their understanding
of the role of civic engagement and of political
processes in the local, national, and/or global
community. Students will apply the concepts
of political thinking and the political inquiry
process to investigate, and express informed
opinions about, a range of political issues and
developments that are both of significance in
today’s world and of personal interest to
them. This course helps students to
communicate and learn in light of gospel
values and to use and integrate the Catholic
faith tradition in everyday work.

managing work and life transitions, and helps
students focus on their goals through the
development of a career plan. This course will
help the student to meet the Ontario Catholic
Graduate Expectations by helping him/her to
be a self-directed, responsible, life-long
learner who develops and demonstrates
his/her God-given potential.

This course provides students with
opportunities to explore various world
Political Philosophy and Aesthetics, students
will demonstrate an understanding of the
main questions, concepts and theories that
have concerned us through the ages. These
will then allow students to reflect on how to
rely on their Catholic faith to help find
answers in their search for wisdom and
knowledge.
This course will help the student to meet the
Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by
helping him/her to be a reflective, creative
and holistic thinker who solves problems and
makes responsible decisions with an informed
moral conscience for the common good. The
course will also help students refine skills used
in researching and investigating topics in
philosophy. Specific attention will be given to
the Catholic Christian philosophical tradition.
