Previously she was a Public Health Advisor with the Indian Health Service; Director of the Division of Dental Health, Maine Bureau of Health; Associate Professor in Applied Dentistry at the University of Colorado School of Dentistry; Chief of Dental Hygiene, JFK Child Development Center at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center; and Program Associate, Institute for the Study of Mental Retardation and Related Disabilities in Ann Arbor, MI. She has worked extensively with community-based programs for young children, children and adults with special health care needs, migrant families, elders, and homeless families. 1 OSAP-NIOSH BBP Grant Committee Roster Helene Bednarsh RDH MPH Kandis Garland RDH MS Director of the HIV Dental Ombudsperson Program, Boston Public Health Commission. She received a B.S. and a Certificate in Dental Hygiene from the University of Michigan and a Masters in Public Health from the University of Texas, Health Sciences Center at Houston. She is Vice President of HIVDENT. She is a member of the New England AIDS Education and Training Center faculty and serves as their Dental Director. She was a member of the ADA/DAAC special workgroup on the Management of Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens and Evaluation of Occupational Exposure to TB. Assistant Professor, First-Year Clinical Coordinator, and Health & Safety Coordinator in the Department of Dental Hygiene, Idaho State University. With 14 years of clinical dental hygiene experience, she serves as a content expert on the American Dental Association National Board Dental Hygiene Test Construction Committee. Professor Garland's research focuses on infection control topics and has been published in refereed and peer-reviewed journals. She has presented her research at local, state, national, and international meetings. Amy Collins, MPH, BS, BSN CAPT, USPHS Director of Compliance and Education for Total Medical Compliance, Inc. where she is responsible for the development and supervision of compliance programs within the organization. TMC provides onsite OSHA, infection control, HIPAA compliance solutions to dental and medical practices as well as seminars and webinars on various compliance issues. She has over 20 years’ experience working in the outpatient environment, both at the front line delivering patient care and in the management arena. Epidemiologist, Dental Infection Control, Division of Oral Health, CDC. CAPT Collins worked as a research microbiologist at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD; critical care nurse with certification in emergency nursing in the United States Navy; and practiced hospital epidemiology and infection control at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center. In 2005, she was bestowed the Florence Nightingale Award by the International Committee of the Red Cross. She obtained bachelor’s degrees in microbiology from Georgia State University, nursing from the University of Maryland, and a master’s degree in public health in epidemiology from Johns Hopkins University. Eve Cuny MS Director of Environmental Health and Safety and Assistant Professor in the department of Dental Practice at Pacific Dugoni School of Dentistry. Ms. Cuny is a consultant to the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs and the FDI Education Committee. She has served as an expert reviewer and advisor to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and is past chairperson of the Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention (OSAP). She is an internationally recognized expert in infection control in dentistry; publishing, consulting and lecturing throughout North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Kathy Eklund RDH MHP Director of Infection Control and Occupational Health, and Research Subject and Patient Safety Advocate at the Forsyth Institute in Boston, Massachusetts. She is an adjunct associate professor at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Forsyth School of Dental Hygiene, where she teaches senior level courses in oral health research. She has published numerous articles and contributed to several texts and educational learning modules on infection prevention and control. She is one of the authors of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Guidelines for Infection Control in Dental Health-Care Settings- 2003. Karen Gregory RN Shira Kramer PhD Founder and President of EI, has over 30 years of diverse public health experience in all aspects and phases of epidemiological research. She is the co-author of two textbooks on epidemiology and has highly specialized expertise in environmental and occupational risk factors for chronic diseases. Her goal is to move away from the traditional risk model of epidemiology as a science that simply measures associations between exposure and disease, to a focus on using data and knowledge to improve community health. Angela Laramie MPH An epidemiologist with the Sharps Injury Surveillance Project in the Occupational Health Surveillance Program at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. She has participated in national workgroups addressing sharps injuries and has presented findings from the Sharps Injury Surveillance Project at national and international meetings. She has collaborated with the CDC, piloting a web-based system for bloodborne pathogen exposure surveillance as well as the Workbook for Designing, Implementing and Evaluating a Sharps Injury Prevention Program. She also works closely with hospitals across the state providing technical assistance regarding sharps injury surveillance and prevention. In addition to sharps injury prevention, her work also focuses on musculoskeletal disorders among healthcare workers. She received her MPH from Boston University School of Public Health and has spent nearly her entire career addressing work-related injuries among health care workers. 2 OSAP-NIOSH BBP Grant Committee Roster Helen Ristic PhD Director of Scientific Information with the American Dental Association since 2004. Helen came to the ADA in 2000 as the assistant director of the Seal of Acceptance Program. Before coming to the ADA, Helen was a research professor in the department of Neurology at Northwestern University. She completed post-doctoral fellowships at the University of Michigan in the Departments of Internal Medicine and Pharmacology after receiving a PhD in Pharmacology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has over 20 years of experience in basic, applied and clinical research, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals. Olivia Wann RDA BS JD Founder and owner of Modern Practice Solutions consulting with the dental profession on compliance issues. She originally was a Dental Office Manager, later serving as a Dental Software Support Technician and continues to maintain a current license as a Registered Dental Assistant. She participated in Georgia Tech's Course in Occupational Safety & Health Standards for General Industry and is authorized by the Department of Labor as an OSHA Outreach Trainer. She earned a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Health Care Administration and a Doctorate in Jurisprudence. 3
