This is your chance to reflect on your year and represent what you have learned, how you have grown, and what this past year means to you. Begin with an overall statement about how your year went (or is going). This is your thesis. Support this statement with examples from the three areas outlined below. I. Academics: Give a general characterization of the year a. Did it go well/poorly, better/worse, meet your expectations? Was it an easy/hard year, are you happy with evaluations? What do you hope to improve next year? b. Although you may cover your entire academic schedule, avoid going through a bland list. You should, at the very least, pick out a couple of classes to focus on that you liked a lot and in which you learned a lot and explain why. Focus on the value of these classes to you as a student and as a person. c. If you failed anything, you must discuss this, even if only briefly. II. Community Participation: What was your role in the SAS community? a. Did you speak a lot in Core Group and Community Meeting? Why/why not? How did your skills as a speaker, a listener, and a citizen in a democracy develop this year? b. Did you serve on committees? Fairness, Agenda, Recruitment, Orientation, Fair, Graduation, other A-School activities? To what degree did you push yourself to be more of a leader, a “doer”, an engaged participant? c. Overall, what did you learn from your participation in a Just Community? III. Personal Growth: How have you changed this year? a. Have you met goals you set for yourself both in and out of school? b. How has SAS affected your development of leadership, motivation, responsibility, awareness, creativity, independence, sensitivity, honesty, relationships with peers and adults? How are you different now than at the beginning of the year? c. How have your passions (for example in sports, the arts, science, community service, clubs, etc.) helped you develop as a person this year? Conclude by setting your goals for the future.
