Updated 5/21/13 Program Request - Abbreviated Template Utah Valley University BA/BS in Integrated Studies, Emphasis in American Indian Studies 05/28/2013 Section I: Request The Integrated Studies Department in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Utah Valley University requests to offer an emphasis in American Indian Studies in the BA/BS in Integrated Studies degree effective Fall 2014. This program was approved by the Board of Trustees on October 24, 2013. Section II: Need An American Indian Studies minor currently exists within the Interdisciplinary Studies Program (IDST). Minors in the IDST have customarily had a parallel IS emphasis. This proposal brings American Indian Studies into conformity with the other IDST minors. The American Indian Studies emphasis in the Integrated Studies BA/BS will provide students with academic experiences, skills, and strategies to understand the scope of American indigenous communities within scholarly and applied contexts. Graduates will receive an academic background preparing them for relevant employment in tribal governments and other Indian organizations, state or federal agencies which serve Indian tribes and organizations, and private sector enterprises that work with Indian tribes and organizations. The American Indian Studies IS emphasis will stress the traditional acquisition of knowledge and skills that apply to American Indian communities and a vital sense of service to these communities. Section III: Institutional Impact The proposed emphasis will not significantly affect enrollments in other instructional areas, because the students who would take advantage of this emphasis would largely be the same as those who would currently minor in American Indian Studies or those who would take advantage of new proposed concentrations in Indian Affairs Management in the Political Science BA and BS. Since this emphasis will be offered within Integrated Studies, no change in administrative structures is needed. In addition, this emphasis will require no new faculty or facilities. Section IV: Finances The proposed emphasis requires no addition fiscal resources.
