Rejoice in the full range of human experience during our 2013-14 season, with something for everyone. Spring Awakening (musical), Sept 26 – Oct 13, Main Stage Book and lyrics by Steven Sater; music by Duncan Sheik. Contains mature themes, sexual content, and adult language. Winner of 8 Tony Awards including Best Musical, 4 Drama Desk Awards, and 4 Olivier Awards including Best Musical, Spring Awakening explores the journey from adolescence to adulthood with a poignancy and passion you’ll never forget. It’s a powerful celebration of youth and self-discovery in a world of unresponsive adults. A rock and roll musical adaptation of the Frank Wedekind’s 1891 expressionistic play about the trials, tribulations, and exhilaration of the teen years, Spring Awakening features “the most gorgeous Broadway score this decade”. (Entertainment Weekly) Accomplice (comedy/thriller), Nov 1 – 10, Newberry Loft By Rupert Holmes, creator of The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Contains mature themes, sexual content, and adult language. Smart, witty, sexy, and inventive, Accomplice begins as a conventional thriller set in an English country house, but keeps the audience guessing at every turn. An unscrupulous wife and her lover plan to murder her stuffy husband. Or so it seems … But who is really the next victim, and who is planning their demise? And which person is the “Accomplice”? Charming, suspenseful and highly entertaining, Accomplice won the highly coveted Edgar Award (the “Oscar” of Crime) from the Mystery Writers of America, and the Dramalogue Award for Best Play. Shrek the Musical (musical), Dec 5 – 22, Main Stage Music by Jeanine Tesori; book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire; based on the DreamWorks Animation Motion Picture and the book by William Steig; Recommended for all audiences. Please note - children under 4 will not be admitted to the theater. The hilarious and irrepressibly charming story of everyone’s favorite ogre. In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre – not a handsome prince – shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Add a donkey who won’t stop talking, a vertically challenged bad guy with a “short” temper, a cookie with an attitude, and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand – Shrek. The Piano Lesson (play), Feb 7 – 16, Newberry Loft By August Wilson. Contains mature themes and racial language. Set in Pittsburgh, 1936, The Piano Lesson centers on the conflicting wills of a young widow, Berniece, and her brother Boy Willie, as they vie for possession of their family's most important heirloom - an ornately carved piano bearing representations of their enslaved ancestors. Berniece plans to pass it along to her daughter, but Boy Willie wants to sell it for cash to buy the same Mississippi land that their family once worked as slaves. In a home haunted by memories, The Piano Lesson is the story of a family’s struggle to embrace or deny their epic inheritance. The play is part of Wilson’s 10-play cycle chronicling the African American experience in the 20th century, and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play, New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play, and the Peabody Award. Contains mature themes, sexual content, and adult language. Watch for the Nov 2013 film release starring Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts! Described by The New York Times as "the most exciting new American play Broadway has seen in years," August: Osage County centers on the Weston family – a cast of eccentric characters including the sharp-tongued, pill-popping matriarch, Violet, and her alcoholic poet husband, their 3 grown daughters, and a host of extended family members, each with their own little secrets. The whole clan reunites in a frenzy at the Oklahoma homestead upon Beverly’s mysterious disappearance, releasing a maelstrom of unsettling revelations. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, 5 Tony Awards including Best Play, Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play, Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Broadway Play, and the New York Drama Critic’s Circle Award for Best Play, August: Osage County is gripping, blisteringly honest, bitingly funny — and sensationally entertaining. You know … the usual family stuff. Fun fact: former OJR School District student and Steel River Playhouse alum, Anne Berkowitz, understudied the role of “Jean” in the Broadway production.
