Two cardboard boxes, big enough to sit inside.
Sometimes they’re kings, soldiers, astronauts.
Birt and Etho take them out each day, climb up Sudden
Sometimes they’re pirates sailing wild seas and skies.
Hill and sit on them.
But always, always they’re big friends.

They sail, run, fly. They chatter and giggle, him and Etho.
And then one Monday they meet another box carrier
They watch small movements in the valley and feel as big who wants to join them.

This tiny boy is called Shu.
Birt loves their two-by-two rhythm.
He has watched Birt and Etho every day and finally found
a big enough box and asked if he could play too.

Etho smiles and says, “Sure!”
Sometimes they are dragon-slayers or sky-scraper
And so the three sit in their boxes and watch one bird
dancers.

One night, Birt smashes his box, stamps on it, rips it to
