BAM Danmark wins design and build contract for European School in Copenhagen
Bunnik, the Netherlands, 17 November 2015 – BAM Danmark has won the design and build contract
for the European school in Copenhagen. Client is project developer Carlsberg Byen P/S. The school is
built on the site of the Danish brewer Carlsberg, which is completely redeveloped. The project has a
contract value of over € 40 million.
The former Carlsberg brewery complex is situated next to Copenhagen’s city center. Carlsberg moved
its beer production to a location in Jutland in 2008, except for Jacobsen House Brewery, where special
beers are brewed. The thirty-hectare area is redeveloped into Carlsberg City, based on a masterplan
by the Danish architecture agency Entasis. While preserving the historical buildings the new district
provides seat to thousands of houses, shops, cultural facilities, sports facilities, offices and an
educational campus with a new railway station.
The European School has seven floors, including two underground floors, with a total area of 14,000
sq m. The building will accommodate 900 students, divided into primary and secondary education, and
includes teaching and practice rooms, an auditorium, a sports hall and other facilities. The two-floor
basement has 270 parking spaces and extends below an adjacent parcel, where another building wil
be developed. BAM Danmark expects to hand over the project to the City of Copenhagen in August
2018.
It is the third contract for BAM Danmark, which was founded in 2014 by Royal BAM Group. Previous
projects include the construction of a 1,300 sq m office for the Department of Micro and
Nanotechnology and the construction of a biotechnology research centre, both for the Technical
University of Denmark (DTU).
