Corporate Social Responsibility at BIMTECH Philosophy The ethos of social responsibility at the Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH) is no different from the value system of the House of the Birlas, one of the oldest and the most respected industrialists in India. The Institute is modern and progressive in its outlook but retains its deep commitment to simplicity, respect, sensitivity and care for others and zeal to contribute positively to the progress of society. The Institute exercises the tenets of ethics in its interactions and engagements with its various stakeholders. Students and Education BIMTECH is committed to the UN Principles of Responsible Management Education and has a value driven approach with all its stakeholders. It cherishes its relationship with various NGOs both formed by its alumni as well as external organizations. In keeping with its commitment, it strives to create educational frameworks, materials, processes and environments that enable effective learning experiences for responsible leadership. To begin with the academic curriculum has core as well as elective modules emphasising responsible Business in society. An integrated module comprising of Business Ethics, Corporate Governance and Corporate Social Responsibility is offered as a compulsory module to all students across all programmes. Students are sensitised with the concepts of Social Entrepreneurship and provisions of support and handholding to assist ones who might be enthused and the ones who are keen on becoming entrepreneurs are present. Several forums where students can engage in community development projects, help generate awareness with respect to sustainability principles or promote responsible student behaviour are supported and facilitated by the Institute. Community outreach programmes by students: Ranganathan Society, an NGO, working towards opening libraries in secondary schools in key villages across India is supported by the students at BIMTECH.As part of this support which is financial as well in kind, students have helped the NGO in setting up a library for the prison inmates of the ‘Dasna Jail’ (prison) in the Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh. The students also engage the inmates by holding learning and development workshops for the jail inmates and their children (residing with the female jail inmates) on their premises. 1|Page Students, Faculty and Staff members of BIMTECH voluntarily contribute books, stationery, clothes, furniture, etc. to the children at ‘Jatan’ , an NGO founded by BIMTECH alumni, while each BIMTECH faculty supports the education of one child here with an annual contribution from their salary. Forums: United Friends of Earth and Sustainable Development Forum wherein activities like The Social Entrepreneur, ‘Greenathon’, observance of the Earth Hour, etc are taken up by groups of students having selected these forums as part of their extracurricular activities. ‘BIMTECH Paathshaala’, is a student driven initiative which provides academic support to illiterate and the semiliterate work force engaged in housekeeping, catering and other allied services on the Institute’s campus. The students have also made their mark in the United Nations Online Volunteer Programme administered by United Nation Development Program (UNDP) and Goodness and Mercy Missions (GMM). Research: The students regularly contribute papers in conferences. One of the students won the coveted ‘Prudential Scholarship’ (2012) to pursue Global Citizens Programme in the United States Faculty, Research, Partnerships and Dialogue Faculty engage in conceptual and empirical research about the role, dynamics, and impact of corporations in the creation of sustainable social, environmental and economic value and they are able to share it with their fraternity and publics. Partnerships and Dialogue: In order to expand BIMTECH’s knowledge of the challenges faced by the corporate managers in meeting social and environmental responsibilities and to explore jointly effective approaches to meeting these challenges, BIMTECH has several partnerships and forums for dialogue and debate among educators, business, government, consumers, media, civil society organizations, and other interested groups and stakeholders on critical issues related to global social responsibility and sustainability. Partnership with Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI): The expertise of BIMTECH in the area of CSR has been recognised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) where the CSR wing of the Institute has partnered with FICCI in conducting their on-site assessments of CSR initiatives by Indian Corporate for Businessworld- FICCI Annual CSR Awards. Partnership with Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA): The Indian Government’s initiative under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs IICA is a think tank for CSR and is currently in the process of launching an IICA certified CSR professional Programme. In this regard, the CSR Lead at BIMTECH was invited for partnering in the development of course design and content for the programme. Partnership with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI): The Institute supports the goals and objectives of GRI as its organisational Stakeholder and support 2|Page each other as agreed upon in an MoU in learning, development, training and research activities. Partnership with Public and Private Sector Corporations: The faculty from the CSR and Sustainable Development programme are also regularly invited by the private and public sector corporations to deliver management development programmes and training programmes for their executives. MoUs with large scale corporations Steel Authority of India (SAIL), National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Oil and Gas Corporation (ONGC), Indian Farmers Fertilisers Cooperative (IFFCO) facilitate such joint efforts. Partnership with “Grameen Creative Lab”: in the area of Social Business, BIMTECH has collaborated with “Grameen Creative Lab”, an initiative by the Noble Laureate Prof. Mohammed Yunus from Bangladesh Facilitating Dialogue and debate among educators, business, government, consumers, media, civil society organizations, and other interested groups and stakeholders on critical issues related to global social responsibility and sustainability: Partnership with Economic Times (ET): BIMTECH –ET (Economic Times) Annual Global CSR Conference, was founded in 2010 and is a platform where global thought leaders participate and bring on board relevant, contemporary as well as futuristic issues related to Business and Society. Two global level conferences have been organized till date. The first was “CSR as a strategy for Inclusive Development” (organised with Germany as a ‘country’ partner) and the second was CSR and Transparency, organised in collaboration with Global Reporting partnership. Partnership with Business Community Foundation, India, International Business Leaders Forum (U.K) and Emergent Ventures: The leading NGOs of India and UK respectively share and support each other in various knowledge dissemination endeavours and other events .Along with Emergent Ventures, an internally acclaimed carbon advisory firm in India, the Institute jointly organised a two day workshop on “Green Business” in 2009.The programme elucidated contemporary issues like climate change, carbon credits, energy efficiency, clean technologies etc Partnership with All India Management Association (AIMA), New Delhi: The partnership saw BIMTECH extending AIMA knowledge and organising support in the Business-Responsibility Summit, a well acknowledged platform in the domain of Corporate Social Responsibility in the year 2008.
