Unit Syllabus
Course Objectives
The objectives of the course are for the students to:
• acquire a working knowledge of major psychological theories and core concepts
• develop an understanding and appreciation of what makes psychology a science
• develop basic skills in conducting psychological research
• understand the relevance of psychology to their lives
• increase their critical thinking, especially in regards to scientific research about behavior
• continue to develop their oral and written communication skills
This unit contains the most discussed and least understood aspect of behavior: why it occurs.
The current view of the motivation for behavior is a multifaceted approach including biological,
psychological, and sociocultural factors. Therefore, we will explore how each factor contributes
to our behavior. We will also try to understand the different interpretations concerning the role
of genetics and the environment in several areas, including obesity, sexual identity, and the
expression of emotions.
This is the last unit of the semester! In addition to doing the daily reading, it would be a good
idea to start doing some reviewing for the semester exam. You will get a review packet to help
guide your studying. There will not be a test on this unit, but Essential Questions 4 – 6 will be
turned in on the last day of classes before the Semester Exam (Monday, 12/17)!
