Topic: Animals Teaching Approach: frontal, pair work, whole class. Materials: handouts, whiteboard and pen. Time 10’ 12’ 11’ 12’ Teacher Activity I greet the students and distribute the handouts. I briefly introduce the topic by eliciting animal classifications from the students (mammal, insect, fish, bird, reptile, amphibian). I write these words down on the board and ask the students to give me a few examples of each group. I write their answers on the board and ask them to copy them to their handouts. I then direct their attention to the next exercise and ask them to work in pairs to match up the animals to the verbs (sounds) they make and to write down the onomatopoeic form (if there is one). We check the answers together and I write the answers down on the board. I then ask the students to turn to the other side of the handout. I give instructions on how to complete it (fill in the animal names to create animal idioms). We check the answers together and I clarify the meaning of any unknown idioms. The students are then asked to move to the final exercise on the handout. I instruct them to try to fill in as much of the grid as they can on their own (animal males, females, babies and groups). We then check the answers together and I write all of the answers down on the board. The students ask for clarification if necessary. Student Activity The students participate and give me the names of the animal classifications as well as a few examples of each group. They copy everything from the board to their handouts. The students work in pairs to complete the exercise. They correct their answers as we go inserting anything they may have missed. The students complete the exercise as best they can. They correct their answers as we go along inserting anything they may have missed. The students complete the exercise as best they can.
