Role/Position Definition: Responsible for preparing instruments and supplies to perform
procedures according to the physician’s documented preferred routine. Ability to prepare the
operating field for procedures while performing routine and delegated duties. Provides aide
in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the
surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient.
Qualifications/Position Requirements:
A. Education/Experience
Successfully completed and AST certified Surgical First Assistant Program.
Experience as a First Assistant Preferred.
Associate degree in Surgical Technology Preferred.
3-5 Years of experience in the OR as a Surgical Technologist Required.
Experience in surgery specialties: general, orthopedic, Neurosurgery, Spine, Vascular,
Trauma, and Plastic surgery Preferred.
B. Licensure/Certification
Surgical First Assistant Certification Preferred.
Surgical Technologist Certification Preferred.
Current BLS Required.
C. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Demonstrates organization, self motivation, good communication and interpersonal
skills.
Requires constant judgment and response; occasionally in response to disasters or
emergencies, actual events or drills.
Work Environment:

Duties and Responsibilities:
A. Determine specific equipment needed per procedure.
B. Review permit to confirm procedure and special needs.
C. Select and placement of x-rays for reference.
D. Assists in moving and positioning of patient.
E. Insert and remove Foley urinary bladder catheter.
F. Place pneumatic tourniquet with surgeon.
G. Drape patient within surgeon’s guidelines.
H. Provide retraction of tissue and organs for optimal visualization with regard to tissue
type and appropriate retraction instrument and/or technique, under physician
supervision.
I. Assists in maintaining hemostasis by direct pressure, use and application of
appropriate surgical instrument for the task, placement of ties, placement of suture
ligatures, application of chemical hemostatic agents, or other measure as directed by
the surgeon.
J. Use electrocautery mono and bi-polar.
K. Clamp, ligate, and cut tissue per surgeon’s directive.
L. Close all wound layers (facia, subcutaneous, and skin) as per surgeon’s directive.
M. Insert drainage tubes per surgeon’s directive.
N. Select and apply wound dressings.
O. Perform any other duties or procedures incident to the surgical procedure deemed
necessary and as directed by the surgeon.
P. Assists in a variety of surgery specialties: General surgery, Orthopedic surgery,
Neurosurgery, Spinal surgery, Vascular surgery, Trauma surgery, and Plastic surgery.
Q. Assists in the placement of orthopedic postoperative devices.
R. Supports, and performs according to, approved policies and procedures.
S. Considers patient rights in performance of job duties and responsibilities.
T. Participates as a team member in support of the total perioperative process.
U. Performs all other duties as assigned.
