The National University of Ireland, Galway invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a Postdoctoral Researcher as part of the ERC-funded project ‘The Reception and Circulation of Early
Modern Women’s Writing, 1550-1700 (RECIRC)’, led by Professor Marie-Louise Coolahan, Principal
Investigator (English, School of Humanities). The position is full-time for 12 months.
The RECIRC project
RECIRC is producing a large-scale, quantitative analysis of the reception and circulation of women’s writing from 1550 to 1700. The focus includes writers who were read in Ireland and Britain as well as women born and resident in Anglophone countries; the subject of study is not limited to authors who wrote in English. The successful applicants will join a research team that includes five postdoctoral researchers and one PhD researcher. RECIRC is organised in four interlocking work packages: transnational religious networks; the international republic of letters; the manuscript miscellany; and book/manuscript ownership. The research team are based at the Moore Institute in the Hardiman Research Building.
The post
This position, funded by the Irish Research Council, extends the work of the RECIRC project, which is focused on the English-speaking world, by addressing the reception of Irish-language women’s writing into the eighteenth century. The postdoctoral researcher will research the transmission and translation of Irish-language women’s writing. The researcher will also contribute to the project,
‘Women’s Poetry in Ireland, Scotland and Wales, 1400-1800’ (in collaboration with Aberystwyth
University and University of Edinburgh), which is producing a multi-lingual anthology and comparative critical study (for further details, see http://womenspoetry.aber.ac.uk/en/).
The work of the postdoctoral researcher includes the following duties:
Archival research on female-authored texts in the Irish language, their reception and circulation, 1400-1800
Analysing data and results
Preparation of texts and translations for anthology
Preparation of papers for dissemination (presentation and publication)
Preparation of data for online virtual research environment
Contribution to the project website
Associated administrative duties
Qualifications
Suitable candidates must meet the following criteria
PhD in early modern Irish, English, History or a pertinent field
Fluency in the Irish language
Knowledge of early modern Irish history and literature
Experience in archival and historical research
Excellent writing and communication skills
Ability to work well both collaboratively and independently
Highly motivated, with excellent organisational skills
It is also desirable that suitable candidates would have experience in some or all of the following areas:
Women’s writing
Theories and practices of editing and translation
Reception history
Experience of working with databases
Excellent IT skills
Peer-reviewed publication record
Salary: €30,117.08 per annum (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply)
Start date: The position is available from July 2015.
