Waikato Dementia Network
Meeting 3 October 2013
Janine welcomed everyone, and those present (see attendance and apology lists below) introduced themselves. Marja presented a brief
overview of the National Dementia Cooperative and the Dementia Networks in Wellington and Christchurch. Jane facilitated a discussion
covering the following questions.
What networks already exist? No dementia-specific networks exist. AgeWISE is a DHB advisory group. Some informal groups in various
locations.
What would be the purpose of a dementia network? Sharing information, resources, and experience (knowledge exchange). Getting to know
people, knowing who to contact, problem solving together, identifying training needs for the Waikato, developing resources together, expert
practitioner group, dementia champions.
Who should be invited? Everyone in the Waikato DHB area, who is working in the area of dementia, and belongs to the NDC. A diagram was
created indicating the various professional groups, copied on the last page of this document.
How often will we meet?
Every second month.
What day and time would be best?
Not a Monday or Friday. Lunchtime would be good, over a brown bag lunch. Agreed on Thursdays from 12 to 1.30
Venue?
While the Bryant Education Centre is a nice venue, parking is not easy. Today people came from Putaruru, Thames, Cambridge, and Te
Kauwhata, as well as Hamilton. Resthaven in Cambridge offered their large meeting space. All agreed that this would be very suitable.
Steering group and facilitator?
Suzanne Ings volunteered to maintain the mailing list and send out invitations (Marja will send the database to Suzanne). Juliette Tuckey,
Janine Burton and Jane Kay agreed to join Suzanne to form the steering group.

The group based the terms of reference on those of Wellington and Canterbury. See separate document.
Next meeting
5 December 2013, topic: get to know each other. Each organisation will have 3 – 4 minutes to say what they do. Let Suzanne know if your
organisation will be represented.
Ideas for topics of future meetings: discuss the ethical issues that were recently collated by the NDC; invite Ruth to talk about the concept of
dementia champions.
