Online Interactive Learning Format EDUX 6285 (F, G, H) DIMENSIONS OF LEARNING: THE BASICS Course Description EDUX 6285 (1-3 Units available). This 2nd Edition course is a research-based instructional framework that proposes learning involves a complex system of interactive processes with five types of thinking, each represented by one dimension in Marzano’s Dimensions of Learning model. In this course, the dimensions will be described and strategies for employing them will be provided through examples and useful planning tools. Participants will discover that each dimension does not function independently of the others. There is a constant flow between and among the dimensions, as students gain knowledge, practice skills, and complete tasks that require complex reasoning. Finally, an explanation of how performance assessment tasks can be designed using the Dimensions of Learning model will be offered, and participants will have the opportunity to tie all the pieces together as they develop performance tasks for a unit of instruction. Course Objectives • Understand how attitudes and perceptions about learning affect students' dispositions regarding classroom climate and classroom tasks. • Propose solutions to increase the promotion of positive attitudes and perceptions in a classroom situation. • Understand the way knowledge can be organized to increase students' acquisition and integration of knowledge. • Develop strategies for helping students acquire and integrate declarative and procedural knowledge. • Identify strategies for explicitly teaching students complex reasoning skills and processes. • Differentiate the eight thinking processes that help students extend and refine knowledge. • Examine processes that help students use declarative and procedural knowledge meaningfully. • Develop tasks that employ extending and refining knowledge and that use knowledge meaningfully. • Understand how productive habits of mind serve as a backdrop to learning and support lifelong learning. • Propose strategies for fostering productive habits of mind in students. • Understand how and why Dimensions of Learning is an effective model to use when designing performance tasks that assess student knowledge. • Design a performance assessment task using the Dimensions of Learning model.
