POSITION SUMMARY
With dual reporting to the school principal and the Career and Technical Education (CTE)
team within the Office of Pathways to College and Career (OPCC), the College & Career
Academy Coordinator will have overall responsibility for managing the daily operations of
the CTE College & Career Academies within his or her designated high school, as well as
monitoring and managing to CTE key performance indicators. Each Coordinator will work
with the CTE Academy Coordination Manager, as well as their principal, counselors and
other school-based staff to ensure the academies’ success. Coordinators will also serve as the
liaison between central office CTE staff and other CTE stakeholders (e.g., teachers, students,
parents, external partners). Recruiting is conducted jointly by OPCC and the school.
Principal Accountabilities
1. Serve as ‘lead’ school-based CTE representative
a. Represent CTE as school point-person and liaison for CTE programs, connecting
school-based staff to central office and area teams and to the community
(parents, externals partners, etc.)
b. Develop and implement school-specific strategy for academy marketing and
student recruiting, leveraging central CTE resources and working with schoolbased staff as needed.
2. Drive integration between CTE and core school staff – Facilitate integrated teacher/staff
teams at school, connecting CTE and core academic staff for common planning, student
progress reviews, and discussions about supplemental needs.
3. Collaborate with CTE and school staff to provide direct student support
a. Collaborate with CTE Partnership Development team to support coordination of,
and maximize access to, work-based learning and service learning opportunities
for students.
b. Collaborate with College & Career Coaches and/or counselors to ensure
appropriate day-to-day supports are provided at school level to CTE students;
assist in coordinating OPCC workshops as needed (e.g., FAFSA and What’s
Next Illinois workshops) for CTE students.
c. Promote and help connect students to supplemental educational programs and
opportunities (e.g., summer enrichment, after-school programs, college
articulation and dual credit, etc.)
d. Support design and execution of capstones, college & career fairs, and other CTE
student events.
4. Planning and Performance Management/Evaluation
a. Collaborate with school administrators to ensure that CTE goals and KPIs are
reviewed frequently, accomplished through demonstrable student outcomes, and
incorporated into school planning exercises (e.g., SIPAAA).
b. Collaborate with counselors to review and communicate student performance to
students, parents and school staff periodically; aide in subject selection for
students; ensure that transcripts reflect coursework and graduation requirements;
enforce proper sequencing by programmers.
c. Support central office efforts to analyze academy opportunities and collect data
on students and academies, and providing timely, accurate responses to requests
for data or other support.
5. Facilitate Administrative Academy Activities
a. Support annual budgeting and expenditure efforts in academies, working with
school-based personnel (e.g., business manager) to monitor purchase orders and
ensure funds are used in a timely and appropriate manner to support delivery of
CTE instruction.
b. Identify, and coordinate with central office to address, teacher needs (e.g.,
propose professional development topics for central office to facilitate, support
CTE teacher recruitment efforts, disseminate CPS policies and procedures, etc.)
c. Support daily academy operations and new academy development as needed by
troubleshooting day-to-day operational issues (e.g., assisting with set-up of new
classroom and lab facilities, monitoring contracts between academies at the
school and affiliated agencies, etc.)
QUALIFICATIONS
Skills:
1. Project planning capabilities, including experience aligning and managing activities
toward execution of identified goals.
2. Excellent organization, written and verbal communication, and technology skills (e.g.,
familiarity with Microsoft Office programs).
3. Self-starter with ability to conduct multiple projects concurrently, both independently and
as a member of a collaborative team.
4. ‘Can-do,’ solutions-oriented approach to problem solving.
5. Ability to unite teams around a clear vision for serving schools and achieving student
success.
6. Ability to build trusting relationships and function effectively at the school and central
office level.
7. A track record of success as demonstrated by superior academic and professional
achievement.
8. Some knowledge of career and technical education, including industry trends and/or
educational best practices preferred.
9. Experience with educational program evaluation preferred.
Type of Education Required: BA/BS from an accredited college or university is
required.
Type of Experience and Number of Years: Three to five years of experience
facilitating collaboration within and among businesses, post-secondary institutions, schools,
and community-based organizations. At least 1 year of supervisory experience required.
Background in education, experience in at least one industry related to the academies being
managed, and/or experience working in school environments is ideal, but not required.
Other: Periodic after-school and weekend work may be required.
