WW1 – Skelton on Ure During WW1 14 men from Skelton on Ure lost their lives during the conflict. Day of Rejoicing On the conclusion of the war, it was agreed that peace would be celebrated with a “day of rejoicing” at an event to coincide with Newby Show. Children would be treated to tea, coinciding with a sports day and cricket match. Together with the sports the event would include the burning of an effigy of the Kaiser and drawing competition of “his late imperial majesty”. War Memorial A meeting to plan for a lasting commemoration to Skelton’s fallen was held on 24th March 1919. Believed to have been a Keeper on the estate, recorded in 1914. Remembrance poem written by his father. No. 3111 Rank: Private Served with: “D” Coy. 2nd/5th Battalion of the West Yorkshire Regt. (Prince of Wales Own). Wounded in action and died at the age of 34 in Cambridge Military Hospital 09 07 1916 W Warriner William Warriner, son of Mr & Mrs H Warriner, Newby Lodge.. Former Joiner on the Estate. No. 10372 Rank: Lance Cpl. Served with 12th Battalion Price of Wales’s Own Wounded in action in August 1916 and died in hospital of gun shot wounds aged 20, on 1st September 1916. Buried in St Sever Cemetary Rouen France. T Dearlove – photo in book T Dearlove the son of George and Mary Dearlove of Skelton No.T/34199 Rank: Driver Served with Army Service Coprps attached to the 9th Field Ambulance Army Medical Corps, probably based at the Canada Farm Dressing Station. On his return visits to the village he visited the school to tell the children of his experiences. Likley to have died of wounds at the age of 22 on 27th July 1917 . Remembered with honour at Canada Farm Cemetery, Ypres. J T Hardcastle John Thomas Hardscastle second son of Mr & MrsThomas of Mulwith. No. C/12190 Served with Kings Royal Rifles. Wounded in action in September 1916 rejoined regiment in January 1917, taken prisoner July 10th 1917. Died a captive on 6th August at Deinze. C Fowler Charles Fowler son of William and Emma Fowler of Marton Le Moor where he was born. No.4847 Rank:Private Served with the 2nd Battalion Army Cyclist Corps, then attached to 39th Division Signals HQ and formerly the West Yorkshire Regiment. Died of his wounds on 3rd January 1918., remembered with honour at the Duhallow Cemetary at Ypres. J G Markell John George Markell son of Thomas and Hannah Mary Markell of Newby Lodges, Skelton. No.28929 Rank:Private Served with 1st Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment Prince of Wales Own attached to the 18th Trench Mortar Battery. Killed in action aged 41 on 26th April 1918, remembered with honour at the Belgian Battery Corner Cemetery, Ypres.
