OVERVIEW 2.1 Resume 2011-2012 1.2 Focus on Development and Structure of Society The Role of Psychology, Research and the Self in Relation to Social Work and Development Bachelor Social Work and Development Integrated Practical Assignment I Mrs. drs. Yolanda Richardson Semester II, 16 January 2012 – 27th April 2012 A-PSP02-11 1 ECTS (28 hrs) 2 units /23 hrs During this semester students are going to be studying the self. The students are going to explore and engage in activities that among others will help them learn how to manage emotions and understand the importance of self-reflection and detachment processes. Furthermore students are going to learn how to use tools that promote self-awareness and thus they will acquire the ability to “look inward”. This combined with the module Critical Thinking and Literacy will allow the students to critically assess themselves in any relations, but especially when dealing with participants. Students will also engage in the following modules: i. ii. Introduction to Research Methodology; Critical Thinking and Literacy; 1 iii. Philosophical and Historical Perspectives of Development in the Americas. The aim of this module is for students to put what they have learned during this semester in practice through an integrated assignment. The idea is that during the semester students will internalize the different theories through the experience of a practical assignment. An additional aim of this module is to introduce students to the Social Work profession in the field and the related graduate profile. Students are required to put their acquired communication skills (from Semester I) to practice and individually interview a social worker to experience what it is to prepare oneself for the profession. Furthermore students will also be stimulated to identify and reflect how their personal self and personal development can influence them as a future professional. The students will need to critically assess the experience of the professional and decide what strategy will guarantee their development towards a competent future social worker. This is to stimulate the student to define and assess his/her own development process. Another aim of this module is to have students acknowledge their weaknesses and strengths in relations to their ultimate goal to acquire a bachelor degree in Social Work. In this process the students will be supported by their academic coach, who will assist during this “mirroring” exercise. In the end the module is not only aimed at encouraging students to monitor their own development but it is also aimed at encouraging them to take responsibility for their formal and informal education. It is also aimed at encouraging the students to "design a route" to acquire the competencies of a social worker. The final product is geared at learning the students to use an eportfolio, to reflect on the learning process, to archive their work and evidence of their performances and development. 2.2 Contents of the course The course will be built around the following units and themes: Units Date WK Unit 1 23rd February 2012 Wk 7 Unit 2 13th March 2012 Wk 10 Unit 3 3rd April 2012 Wk 13 Unit 4 24th April 2012 Wk 15 Themes Introduction of Module , themes, planning and logistics 1.
