Zanesville 1810 Lecture Series: A series of programs about the early history of Zanesville and Muskingum County will be presented throughout the second half of 2010. John McIntire & Increase Mathews: What motivated our competing founding fathers? DATE: July 7, 2010 TIME: 7:00 pm LOCATION: John McIntire Public Library, 220 N. Fifth Street SPEAKER: David M. Taylor, Zanesville/Muskingum County historian and author, is a retired pharmacist who has served as an officer and Trustee of the Pioneer and Historical Society for over twenty years and currently serves as its Curator. In addition, he has written numerous articles, and serves as editor, for the Muskingum Journal, the organization’s local history publication. This lecture is presented in partnership with the Muskingum County Library System. Manners, Mores, and the Environment: The frontier world of Zanesville in 1810 DATE: August 29, 2010 TIME: 2:00 pm LOCATION: The Stone Academy, 115 Jefferson Street SPEAKER: Ray Swick, West Virginia State Park and Blannerhassett Island historian, earned his B.A. in History from Marietta College and his M.A. and PhD degrees from the University of Virginia and Miami University, respectively. He is the author of An Island Called Eden and an expert on the history of the mid-Ohio valley. John Chapman: A frontier legend DATE: September 26, 2010 TIME: 2:00 pm LOCATION: Stone Academy, 115 Jefferson Street SPEAKER: William Kerrigan, Professor of History and Chairman of the History Department at Muskingum University, teaches a broad range of courses in American History, including a freshman survey class, and upper level courses on the Early Republic, Ohio History, Public History, and American Environmental History. This program about Johnny Appleseed is being held on the anniversary of his birth. Beyond Ohio: How Zanesville was affected by national and world events in 1810 DATE: October 17, 2010 TIME: 2:00 pm LOCATION: Stone Academy, 115 Jefferson Street SPEAKER: Mike Kline, Ohio University-Zanesville Assoc. Professor of History Emeritus is in his 40th year of teaching Ohio and American History in Zanesville. He has served on the executive board of the Ohio Academy of History and is well known for his presentations at the Zanesville Civil War Roundtable. How Zanesville won the capital, and then lost it DATE: November 18, 2010 TIME: 7:00 pm LOCATION: Elson Hall Auditorium, Ohio University Zanesville SPEAKER: Morton Bach, Ohio University-Zanesville Assistant Professor of History, earned his Ph.D. in American History from Ohio University in 2007 and currently teaches U.S. political history, the history of U.S. foreign relations, and the history of Southeast Asia at OU-Zanesville. In addition, he serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Pioneer and Historical Society of Muskingum County. This lecture is presented as part of OUZ’s Third Thursday program. Fifth Street SPEAKERS: Mike Kline, OU-Z Associate Prof. of History Emeritus Emeritus Chuck Martin, former Zanesville Times Recorder historian Lace Lynch, Muskingum County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society Martin and Lynch have done extensive research about early Zanesville history. Both participated in a very well-received program that was part of the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Stone Academy in 2009. This program is presented in partnership with the Muskingum County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society.
