Ann Arbor, MI Round 3 Ann Arbor Proposal for Local Sustainability Matching Fund Fall 2013 Project Title: Launching Ann Arbor’s Community Climate Partnership Purpose of Project: The project will mobilize community stakeholders to support the implementation of the recently approved City of Ann Arbor Climate Action Plan. Brief description of project goals, strategy, and key activities (250 words or less): This project will build a Community Climate Partnership (CCP) that brings together a cross-section of the community to implement the City’s Climate Action Plan (CAP) by fostering broader community involvement and civic action around climate change. The City of Ann Arbor adopted a CAP in December 2012, which set a target to reduce community-wide greenhouse gas emissions eight percent by 2015 and 25 percent by 2025. Meaningful progress towards this target will only occur with significant community engagement and action because municipal emissions account for less than two percent of community-wide emissions. The CCP represents a new approach by the City to focus on community-level action to address projected climate impacts and community emissions. The Ecology Center, a local-non-profit, will convene and facilitate the partnership to ensure that implementing the CAP is an effort led by the community. Key activities will include convening public meetings and work teams; developing actions agendas and an evaluation framework to monitor progress towards targets set in the CAP; and implementing a communications strategy to heighten awareness of sustainability and climate. Finally, the CCP provides an opportunity to deepen a partnership with the region’s community foundation to support related future efforts.
