Prefixes modify or extend the meanings of words or roots. ○ Example: “pre” means before. The word “pretest” means before the test. Suffix ★ Suffixes are groups of letters attached to the ends of roots, words or word groups. Suffixes serve a grammatical function. A suffix can indicate the part of speech (noun, verb, adjective, adverb). Suffixes can also modify and extend meaning. ○ Example: “-ly” means “in a way that is” so “beautifully” means in way that is beautiful.
