Job summary
The Director of Nursing plans, coordinates and manages the nursing services and employees of The Legacy on
10th and is responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of nursing care and services
provided to the Elders of Legacy on 10th. The Director of Nursing oversees and maintains quality care that is
consistent and exceeds organizational, state and federal regulatory standards as directed by the Administrator
and Novington Management Group staff. The Director of Nursing has the ability to communicate effectively and
advocate for Elder centered/directed care to team members, families, physicians and the at large community.
Summary of essential job functions

Conducts rounds on a daily basis to ensure visibility and attentiveness to all employees, residents and
families and conduct audits to evaluate the quality and appropriateness of nursing care

Hosts daily clinical meeting with ADON’s and RAI Coordinators prior to Department Head stand-up

Attends Department Head Stand-up daily, reporting major issues, staffing needs, admissions,
discharges and transfers, and potential ANE issues.

Holds ADON’s accountable to ensure nursing staff are providing quality and appropriate resident care
that meets or exceeds regulatory standards

Holds ADON’s accountable and maintains administrative authority, responsibility and accountability for
the proper charting and documentation of care and of medications and treatments

Is intimately familiar with all Federal Regulation (State Operations Manual) and Kansas Department on
Aging regulations and ensures that all regulations are covered by a policy and/or procedure, and that
conversely all existing nursing policies and procedures are in accordance with said regulations

In coordination with administrator, medical director and Novington Management Group staff drives the
formulation of written policy and procedures for resident care and make those policies available to
regulators as required by law.

Ensures that all clinical policies and procedures are reviewed and revised according to organizational,
state and federal policy

Holds the ADON’s accountable in the development and implementation of a nursing and direct-care
staff schedule that reflects the needs of the residents, and that is published a minimum of two weeks
ahead with all budgeted positions filled by a qualified employee

Holds ADON’s accountable in ensuring all required records are maintained and submitted, as
appropriate, in an accurate and timely manner

Holds ADON’s accountable in management of restorative nursing procedures for each resident so as to
achieve the highest possible degree of function, self-care, and independence based on resident choice,
where practicable

Holds ADON’s accountable in evaluation of current residents and potential new residents to ensure
Legacy on 10th can provide appropriate level of care

Develops and implements facility infection control program and holds ADON’s accountable in managing
all reports, policies and procedures in accordance with said program

Understands OSHA requirements for nursing and drives the development of and monitoring of
employee safety and health programs i.e. TB and Hepatitis B immunization, lift program, blood borne
pathogens. Coordinates with Administrative team in creating efficient record keeping and workflow
systems

Maintains regular and ongoing communication with Medical Director, physicians, pharmacist and other
ancillary health professionals/consultants ensuring programs and care services meet the needs of the
residents

Manages relationship with all 3rd party vendors who supply nursing products

Thoroughly understands and manages the entire nursing budget, including census driven PPD formulas
and administrative actions associated with it. Understands the agreed upon PPD’s for RN staffing, LPN
staffing, CMA/CNA staffing, RA staffing, Nursing supplies, Pharmacy and Ancillary supplies and
Overtime allowance. Reports outcomes of each pro-actively and retrospectively to Administrator on a
monthly basis

Communicates with Administrative team regarding human resource issues including compliance,
Worker’s compensation, performance and hiring/firing needs in accordance with organizational policy
and procedure, and all federal and state laws and guidelines

Understands practices and communicates Elder directed/centered care on a daily basis. Holds all
employees accountable to the principles and values of The Legacy on 10 th, The Eden Alternative and
the Pioneer Coalition

Assists with hiring and providing orientation/training and retention of a sufficient number of qualified staff
to carry out nursing programs and services. Ensures employee performance meets or exceeds
expectations and periodic performance appraisals are conducted on a timely basis. Holds ADON’s
accountable for completion of all of the above.

Oversees and helps develop clinical continuing educations, in-services training and program
development

Understands and is able to complete the MDS 3.0 assessment and are able to establish care goals that
meet the ongoing needs and desires of the residents. Holds ADON’s and RAI Coordinators
accountable in completion of the RAI process in accordance with all requirements and guidelines

Understands and completes required forms and documents in accordance with facility policy, state and
federal regulations. Holds ADON’s and RAI Coordinators accountable in completion of said forms and
documents.

Understands and manages all nursing/clinical aspects of state or federal government survey processes.
Manages positive relationship with surveyors

Ability to perform duties of charge nurse as needed

On-call 24/7 for all emergencies with exceptions for vacations and scheduled days off. Participates in
on-call schedule

Demonstrates the ability to set and establish priorities

Manages time effectively

Always provides proper notice in advance of absence

As an exempt position works a minimum of 40 or more hours weekly

Maintains work area in a neat an orderly manner

Maintains a well-groomed professional appearance

Drives the creation of, and ongoing activities of the Quality Improvement Committee (QAPI)

Drives the furthering, change and development of organizational culture in accordance with The Eden
Alternative, PEAK and Novington Management Group initiatives.

Serves as a positive role model to all other Legacy on 10 th employees, residents and families

Is familiar with, and upholds the standards of conduct of the organization

Believes in, and upholds the values of the Eden Alternative, The Pioneer Coalition and The Legacy on
10th
Minimum requirements
The Director of Nursing must be a RN from an accredited college, be currently licensed in Kansas without
encumbrance, be responsible for maintaining professional licensure and CEU requirements. The Director of
Nursing must have at least 1-2 years supervisory experience in a geriatric setting. Current CPR certification
required. May be designated to assume responsibilities of daily operations of the organizations in the
Administrator’s absence.
The DON is well-versed in Federal Regulations (State Operations Manual) and Kansas Department on Aging
Regulations, and ensures that all policies, procedures and practices are in line with, and performed in
accordance with those regulations
The DON must be technically oriented, detail oriented and proficient in the use of computers and electronic
health record systems
The DON, while not regularly scheduled to work as a charge nurse, or hours outside of 8-6 Monday through
Friday, will be asked to serve on a weekend rotation, take secondary call, or participate in hours/work outside of
those hours as circumstances require
Regular work hours: between the hours of 0800-1800, Monday through Friday plus weekend rotation and
participation in on call rotation
Other requirements

May be required to lift equipment or supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, may be required
to assist with resident transfer

Frequently be required to carry objects including charts and equipment up to 30 pounds.

While performing the Director of Nursing duties you may be required to perform standing, sitting,
twisting, bending, squatting, kneeling or crouching when assisting others

Vision should be corrected to average to assess and respond to resident needs. Specific vision abilities
required by this position include close vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus

Hearing should be corrected to average range of hearing, as corrected, in order to respond to
resident/staff/physician/family communications

Must be able to speak, read and write the English language in a understandable manner

Must be able to cope with mental and emotional stress

The DON is required to work with all persons at Legacy on 10th and must demonstrate the maturity to
have positive, cordial, respectful and professional relations with them. This includes employees,
residents, families, vendors, other health care professionals and the community at large.

The DON is considered a leader of the organization, and must represent the organization professionally
at all times.

The DON will be proficient in the answering of phones, and in performing general customer service as
encountered.
