Technology and Online Computer Access Requirements: Please purchase a USB drive (also known as a flash drive or a jump drive) and bring it with you to class every day (as well as your textbook). ISBN 0-538-74822-2 Students are required to use Word 2010 to complete assignments and take examinations for this course. Students are NOT required to purchase Office 2010 or to own a computer. Students may use the Computer Lab located in our campus Libraries and Learning Centers; or if one of the computer classrooms is free, students may use it with the approval of an instructor. You may need to arrange your schedule to be able to use on-campus computers to complete your assignments. If you desire to purchase Microsoft software, please be aware that the bookstore has a CD available at an extremely low price. For a lower fee than in the stores you will receive a package that includes: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, Publisher, and more. Course Objectives: (what the course will do) This is a hands-on course in which you will learn to use a computer to practice Microsoft Word. Microsoft Word is a word-processing program used to create common business and personal documents. At the completion of this course, the student will be able to independently use word processing knowledge and skill to complete term papers, essays, and outlines. Page 1 of 4 Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) Assessed in this Course: At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Create a folder and save assignments to the folder. 2. Format text to include: changes in line spacing, tabs, justification, margins, page breaks, and page numbering. 3. Create, revise, and print a multi-page document with headers, page numbers, and footnotes. 4. Use the thesaurus, spell check, and outline features in a document. 5. Prepare a Works Cited page. 6. Prepare an Outline. 7. Prepare an academic paper in an MLA or APA style. In order for your information to be released, a form must be signed and in your records located in the Admissions/Registrar’s Office. Attendance / Withdrawal Policies: Class attendance is part of the student’s grade (refer to the following section). All students are required to sign a class attendance roster every class session. The roster will be available for the first 15 minutes of each class. Anyone entering class after the first 15 minutes will be counted absent for the entire class. No student may sign the attendance roster on behalf of another student—such an act will be treated as a violation of the student regulations and will be penalized under the College’s established guidelines. Late arrival (10 minutes late) three times and/or leaving early three times constitutes an absence. Students are responsible for all materials discussed in class. Withdrawal Students may withdraw from the course by the deadline by completing a withdrawal form from the Admissions Department. The Course Content/Assignment Sheet will enable easy tracking of your progress. Your ability to understand and follow the directions in the text thoroughly will be an essential component for successful completion of the projects/homework. Every in-class assignment from the textbook will have at least one Skills Review Project (homework) to accompany it. These Skills Review Projects will be used as tools for you and your instructor to evaluate the accuracy, understanding and completeness of the material. Any student not present at the time of any in-class activity (e.g. quiz, test, assignment), whether scheduled or unscheduled, will receive a zero for that activity unless arrangements are made with the instructor prior to the activity. It is the student’s responsibility to read all materials. Questions on quizzes and tests will come from the material covered as well as from inclass discussion and additional assignments. Lectures during class meetings will cover important points or related material for that week. The Final Exam will be hands-on. Students will be permitted to use the textbook and class notes to complete the final exam. F Page 3 of 4 Course Calendar: Classroom Rules and Policies: Refer to attached Course Calendar (assignment) Sheet. These assignments are to be printed and turned in as indicated on the calendar. Only one late assignment will be accepted and you must use your “No Questions Asked” coupon when you turn in that one late assignment by the beginning of the next class. Your name and the assignment number should appear on the page of each project and/or assignment. If a project has multiple parts, arrange the pages for the project together in the sequence you were instructed to print them. All projects and/or assignments for each week must be stapled together in order. The instructor reserves the right to refuse any assignments that do not conform to these requirements. Homework must be completed using Word 2010. You may not use Microsoft Works or WordPerfect, etc. to complete the assignments. If you do not have access to Microsoft Word 2010, you are NOT required to purchase it. Refer to the “Technology” section above regarding the use of computers on campus. Your assignments will be saved on your student flash drive. Read all assignment instructions carefully and print only as instructed. Be respectful of your instructor and fellow classmates at all times. As a courtesy, please do not talk, type, or print while the instructor is talking to the class or when a student is asking a question that pertains to the class. Do not “surf” the Web or visit sites such as MySpace during class, unless directed to do so by your instructor. Turn off cell phones and texting devices. You are not permitted to do any texting during class time. The use of any cell phone or texting device during an exam will be presumed as cheating (refer to the section on Academic Integrity). Refrain from bringing food and drink into the classroom. You are encouraged to work with fellow students to solve problems. However, you must complete your own work.
