DARWIN HOCKEY ASSOCIATION RULES FOR JUNIOR COMPETITION

1
Shin Pads
All players in every junior grade must wear shin pads or they will be
removed from the game.

Match Duration
Junior match duration are set by the Junior Management Committee
and are as follows;
Under 8s – 15 minute halves
Under 11s – 20 minute halves
Under 14s – 25 minute halves
Under 17s – 35 minute halves

Player Eligibility
Any player may play in their age group and in any higher age group
without penalty. Where a club has more than one team in the one
grade a player having played three matches in one team must remain
in that team. A player who is eligible to play Under 14s and also plays
Under 17s, must play at least two thirds of the competition games in
Under 14s to be eligible to compete in the Under 14s finals games.
A player who regularly plays in a senior grade competition must
compete in at least 8 games in their age group to be eligible for junior
finals.

Umpires
A junior umpire may not umpire a match in their own age group
unless they are an accredited umpire for that age group.

Interchange
Unlimited interchange players are permitted in all but the highest
grade [Under 17s] where the interchange players are limited to a
maximum of five [5].

Penalty Corners
In all junior grades a penalty corner is to be played out if full time
elapses after the corner is awarded.

Penalty Strokes
Penalty strokes may be awarded in the Under 14 and Under 17
grades.

Goal Shooting
Shots at Goal in Under 14s maybe at any height provided the rules
applying to dangerous play are observed by the umpires.
NOTE: The Tomahawk shot and throwing the ball is totally band from
Under 14 levels and below.

Injury Time
In Under 14 and Under 17 grades the clock is stopped in the event of
an injury to allow time for the injured players to be treated or leave
the field.

Rules for Finals
In the Under 8 grade, these games are not played for points and
there is no ladder kept.
In the Under 11 grade, these games are played for points and the
team on the top of the ladder is the winner of the competition, unless
there is a point draw and then both teams win.
In the Under 14 grade, if the score is level at full time, a period of 5
minutes each way sudden death is to be played. If there is no change
in the score the team that finished higher on the ladder at the end of
the minor round will be declared the winner, or following the DHA Bylaw 34 (currently being amended).
In the Under 17 grade, the rules will be the same as for the Senior
competition as per the By-Law 34.1 (currently being amended).

Players on the Field There are to be no more than nine [9] players on the field at one
time. Interchange may occur at any time.

High Ball
The ball should not be lifted under any circumstances.

Dangerous Play
Any dangerous play will be penalized at once. In particular lifting of
the stick before, during and after a hit.

Penalty Corners
In the Under 8 grade, there are no penalty corners.
In the Under 11 grade, the defence of a penalty corner is the same as
in all other grades, allowing at least three [3] players inside the
defensive goal with two [2] other defenders behind the back line. All
other team members are to be behind the centre line.
The ball must be stopped before a shot at goal by the attackers. The
ball may be stopped inside the circle and a shot at goal must go along
the ground.

Coaching
One coach from each team will be allowed on the field during the
game, but they must remain outside the circle whilst the ball is in
play. Coaches are to ensure that reserve players and supporters do
not stand behind the goal or goal line during the game.

Goal Keeping
If a team does not field a goalkeeper, then the coach must nominate
and identify a kicking back before the start of the game, this is best
done by wearing a different coloured shirt. The nominated kicking
back IS required to wear a helmet at all times.

Advantage
Umpires are to use their discretion when applying the rules and allow
the game to flow as much as possible. Note: There is no self play in
U11/U8 grades

Sticks
The players may not raise the stick above shoulder level while playing
the ball in a hitting action.
In addition to the Rules for Junior Competition the following
applies:



There is no self play in Under 11s level and below
The tomahawk shot is totally banned from Under 14s level and below
Overheads (throwing the ball) is totally banned in Under 14s level and below
