Science Performance Grade- 2 Topic – Plants Title: How Plants Grow NGSS Performance Expectation(s) and Learning Target(s): 2-LS2-1 Plan and conduct an investigation to determine if plants need sunlight and water to grow. Lesson Performance Expectations including Standards: (LESSON) Carry out investigations to gather and analyze data to provide evidence to determine if plants need sunlight and water to grow. Student Science Performance A. Gathering: Students will plan and conduct experiments with plant seeds to determine if plants need water and sunlight to grow. o Test item 1: seed/plant with sunlight and water o Test item 2: seed/plant with sunlight; no water o Test item 3: seed/plant with water; no sunlight o Test item 4: seed/plant with no water, no sunlight Record observations to changes over time. B. Reasoning: Analyze observations to determine what elements led to optimum plant growth. C. Communicating: Students construct a written explanation to communicate the results of their experiments that determined if plants needed sunlight and water to grow. Assessment of Student Learning (Formative and Summative): Students will use initial predictions and observations to construct an explanation using evidence to support their conclusion of determining if plants need sunlight and water to grow. Critical Vocabulary: Growth, sunlight, water Science Essentials (Student Performance Expectations From Appendix C, D, E) Science Practices Carrying out Investigations Conduct investigations and record observations to gather data to serve as the basis for evidence. Analyzing & Interpreting Data Make observations of changes of the seeds and plants. Constructing Explanations Use evidence to construct explanations. Events have causes that generate observable patterns. Plants depend on water and light to grow. Allow for partner work and group discussions Students can measure plant growth. Students can conduct repeat experiments using different types of plants or seeds.
