REDEEMER CHURCH OF KNOXVILLE
THE DIVINE SERVICE
The Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost
SEPTEMBER 16, 2012 | 9:00 & 11:00 AM
In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, this church opens wide her doors and
offers welcome to all who sin and need a Savior; to all who are spiritually
weak and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who
struggle and desire victory; to all who are broken and long for healing; to
all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst
after righteousness and want to be satisfied; and to whomsoever will come.
REFLECTIONS
"You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles'
wings and brought you to myself. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and
keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the
earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation."
— Exodus 19:4-6
Commandment follows redemption; the giving of the law follows the Exodus. The
people of God do not earn their place in the covenant by first meeting the covenant
stipulations; rather they are made the people of God while they are still in exile and as
incapable of escape as Sarah was of having children in her old age. …Just as a small
country that depended upon a world power to deliver it from an oppressor would be
obligated to its liberator, so deliverance from our enemies makes us servants of our
conquering King. Because He has saved us already, He has the authority also now to
direct our redeemed lives.
— Michael Horton, The Law of Perfect Freedom
ENTERING INTO GOD’S PRESENCE
WORDS OF ENTRANCE 
Psalm 146
HYMN OF ENTRANCE 
1. Hallelujah, praise Jehovah, O my soul, Jehovah praise;
I will sing the glorious praises of my God through all my days.
Put no confidence in princes, nor for help on man depend;
He shall die, to dust returning, and his purposes shall end.
2. Happy is the man that chooses Israel’s God to be his aid;
He is blessed whose hope of blessing on the Lord his God is stayed.
Heav’n and earth the Lord created, seas and all that they contain;
He delivers from oppression, righteousness he will maintain.
3. Food he daily gives the hungry, sets the mourning pris’ner free,
Raises those bowed down with anguish, makes the sightless eyes to see.
Well Jehovah loves the righteous, and the stranger he befriends,
Helps the fatherless and widow, judgment on the wicked sends.
4. Hallelujah, praise Jehovah, O my soul, Jehovah praise;
I will sing the glorious praises of my God through all my days.
Over all God reigns forever, through all ages he is King;
Unto him, your God, O Zion, joyful hallelujahs sing.
Merciful Father, you have freed us from the bondage of our sins by the blood of
your Son to live new lives. Yet, Father, we so easily fall back again under the yoke
of slavery, dishonoring your gift of freedom through the gospel, even using it at
times as a cover for evil. We ignore your commandments, stray from your ways,
and follow other gods. Looking for life without you, we find only death; looking
for freedom without your law, we trap ourselves in Satan’s snares. Lord, have
mercy on us. Deliver us from our sin and enable us to be your thankful, joyful,
and obedient people. Through Christ our Lord we pray. Amen.
Mason
Do you claim God’s covenant promises on her behalf, and do you look in faith to the
Lord Jesus Christ for her salvation, as you do for your own? | We do.
Do you now unreservedly dedicate your child to God and promise, in humble reliance
upon divine grace, that you will endeavor to set before her a godly example, that you
will pray with and for her, that you will teach your child the doctrines of our holy religion,
and that you will strive, by all the means of God’s appointment, to bring her up in the
nurture and admonition of the Lord? | We do, by God’s grace.
QUESTION TO THE ASSEMBLY OF GOD’S PEOPLE
Do you as a congregation undertake the responsibility of assisting these parents in the
Christian nurture of their children? | We do, by God’s grace.
SILENT CONFESSION OF SIN
WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT
1 Peter 2:9-10; Revelation 1:5-6
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own
possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of
darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God's
people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
Christians, Jesus Christ loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood and made
us to be a kingdom, priests serving his God and Father. To him be glory and dominion
forever and ever.
 Our help is in the name of the Lord, | The Maker of heaven and earth.
PRAYER OF BLESSING
THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
Abigail Faith McCurdy,
Elliotte Faith Shastid,
I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
You are now sealed by the Holy Spirit in baptism and marked as Christ’s own forever.
PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING & PRESENTATION
O Lord, open our lips, | And our mouth will show forth your praise!
Let us welcome the newly baptized into the household of God.
HYMNS OF GRATITUDE & PRAISE 
THE PEACE OF CHRIST 
AND CAN IT BE
Wesley/Roley
1. And can it be that I should gain an interest in the Savior's blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain? For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! how can it be that Thou, my God, should die for me?
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, should die for me!
Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD, O my soul!
I will praise the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have
my being.
Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation.
When his breath departs, he returns to the earth; on that very day his plans
perish.
Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God,
Who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, who keeps faith
forever;
Who executes justice for the oppressed, who gives food to the hungry.
The LORD sets the prisoners free; The LORD opens the eyes of the blind. The
LORD lifts up those who are bowed down; the LORD loves the righteous.
The LORD watches over the sojourners; he upholds the widow and the fatherless, but
the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.
The LORD will reign forever, your God, O Zion, to all generations. Praise the
LORD!
HALLELUJAH, PRAISE JEHOVAH, O MY SOUL (PSALM 146)

Let us offer one another a sign of peace.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
2. He left His Father's throne above, so free, so infinite His grace!
Emptied Himself so great His love, and bled for Adam’s helpless race!
'Tis mercy all, immense and free, for, O my God, it found out me.
Refrain
3. Long my imprisoned spirit lay fast bound in sin and nature's night.
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray; I woke the dungeon flamed with light!
My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
Refrain
RECEIVING GOD’S WORD
4. No condemnation now I dread: Jesus, and all in Him, is mine!
Alive in Him, my living Head, and clothed in righteousness divine,
Bold I approach th'eternal throne, and claim the crown, through Christ my own. Refrain
MERCY SPEAKS BY JESUS’ BLOOD
Gadsby/Webb/McCracken
1. Mercy speaks by Jesus’ blood; hear and sing, ye sons of God;
Justice satisfied indeed: Christ has full atonement made.
2. Jesus’ blood speaks loud and sweet;
here all Deity can meet,
And, without a jarring voice, welcome Zion to rejoice, welcome Zion to rejoice.
“All her debts were cast on Me,
and she must and shall go free.
All her debts were cast on Me,
and she must and shall go free.”
3. Peace of conscience, peace with God,
we obtain through Jesus’ blood;
Jesus’ blood speaks solid rest;
we believe, and we are blest,
We believe, and we are blest.
Chorus
B. Should the law against her roar,
Jesus’ blood still speaks with power,
“All her debts were cast on Me,
and she must and shall go free
She must and shall go free.”
Chorus
(11 AM) INTRODUCTION TO BAPTISM
In the ancient church, members of the congregation greeted one another with a sign of
friendship. In the same way, let us welcome one another in the Lord:
Westminster Shorter Catechism 94
The sacrament of baptism is a washing with water in the name of the Father, the Son,
and the Holy Spirit, which is a sign and seal that we are joined to Christ, that we receive
the benefits of the covenant of grace, and that we are engaged to be the Lord’s.
The McCurdy and Shastid families now bring their new daughters to receive the
sacrament of baptism.
BAPTISMAL VOWS FOR COVENANT PARENTS
Do you acknowledge your child’s need of the cleansing blood of Jesus Christ, and the
renewing grace of the Holy Spirit? | We do.

THE SCRIPTURE LESSON
AND READING OF THE TEN COMMANDMENTS 
EXODUS 12:29-42; 20:1-2 English Standard Version
[29] At midnight the LORD struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the
firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the
dungeon, and all the firstborn of the livestock. [30] And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he
and all his servants and all the Egyptians. And there was a great cry in Egypt, for there
was not a house where someone was not dead. [31] Then he summoned Moses and
Aaron by night and said, “Up, go out from among my people, both you and the people of
Israel; and go, serve the LORD, as you have said. [32] Take your flocks and your herds,
as you have said, and be gone, and bless me also!”
[33] The Egyptians were urgent with the people to send them out of the land in haste.
For they said, “We shall all be dead.” [34] So the people took their dough before it was
leavened, their kneading bowls being bound up in their cloaks on their shoulders.
[35] The people of Israel had also done as Moses told them, for they had asked the
Egyptians for silver and gold jewelry and for clothing. [36] And the LORD had given the
people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they let them have what they asked.
Thus they plundered the Egyptians.
[37] And the people of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred
thousand men on foot, besides women and children. [38] A mixed multitude also went
up with them, and very much livestock, both flocks and herds. [39] And they baked
unleavened cakes of the dough that they had brought out of Egypt, for it was not
leavened, because they were thrust out of Egypt and could not wait, nor had they
prepared any provisions for themselves.
[40] The time that the people of Israel lived in Egypt was 430 years. [41] At the end of
430 years, on that very day, all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt.
[42] It was a night of watching by the LORD, to bring them out of the land of Egypt; so
this same night is a night of watching kept to the LORD by all the people of Israel
throughout their generations.
[20:1] And God spoke all these words, saying, [2] “I am the LORD your God, who
brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
-3-
*You shall have no other gods before me.
You shall not make for yourself an idol.
You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God.

You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
You shall not covet what is your neighbor's.

HYMN OF RESPONSE
JESUS, I COME
Sleeper/Thompson
1. Out of my bondage, sorrow, and night, Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
Into thy freedom, gladness, and light, Jesus, I come to thee;
Out of my sickness, into thy health, out of my wanting and into thy wealth,
Out of my sin and into thyself, Jesus, I come to thee.
2. Out of my shameful failure and loss, Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
Into the glorious gain of thy cross, Jesus, I come to thee.
Out of earth’s sorrows into thy balm, out of life’s storms and into thy calm,
Out of distress into jubilant psalm, Jesus, I come to thee.
3. Out of unrest and arrogant pride, Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
Into thy blessed will to abide, Jesus, I come to thee.
Out of myself to dwell in thy love, out of despair into raptures above,
Upward forever on wings like a dove, Jesus, I come to thee.
THE GREAT THANKSGIVING 
Lift up your hearts!
We lift them up to the Lord!
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God!
It is good and right to do so!
It is very good and right that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to you,
O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, Everlasting God, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Therefore, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we praise
and magnify your glorious name, evermore praising you and singing:

THE FEAST
Gadsby/Digerness
1. With wondering eyes, Lord we admire the feast prepared by grace;
Come, Lord, and set our souls on fire, and fill each heart with peace.
These emblems of thy precious love, by faith may we receive!
And with a solemn pleasure prove, we in thy name believe.

CLOSING HYMN 
O FOR A THOUSAND TONGUES TO SING
Refrain
Wesley/Glaser
1. O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer's praise,
The glories of my God and King, the triumphs of his grace.
Those who have professed faith in Christ for the forgiveness of sins within a church body and who have
been baptized are invited to partake of the Lord’s Supper here at Redeemer. We receive the Lord’s
Supper worthily only if we bear in mind that Christ gave his body for the remission of our sins; it is his
merit only that admits us to this table. It is dangerous to eat the body and blood of the Lord otherwise.
For this reason, we ask those who do not meet the above conditions to refrain from eating. We do
encourage you to come forward for prayer from one of our ministers if you desire it, or to remain seated
and to pray and reflect on what you have heard and seen in the service. The Christian who doubts his
standing before God should labor to have his doubts resolved. This brother or sister in Christ is especially
encouraged to eat this feast, that he or she may be further strengthened in the faith.
The Apostles’ Creed
Christians, in whom do you believe?
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy
Spirit and born of the virgin, Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose
again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of
God the Father Almighty. From there he shall come to judge the living and the
dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the
forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Tithes and Offerings
We break bread in the name of Father, Son and Holy Spirit! And we declare the great
mystery of faith: | Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; | Therefore let us keep the feast.
These are the gifts of God for the people of God. | Thanks be to God!
2. No goodness of our own we bring; we’re sinners vile and base;
Christ is our all; of Christ we sing, and long to see his face.
O may we each, with heart and tongue sing, “Worthy is the Lamb”;
To him alone the praise belongs, and we’ll adore his name.
CONFESSION OF FAITH
September 2011 – August 2012
When the usher directs you, please come forward, by row, to receive the bread and the cup. Please note
that the center cup and inner circle contain grape juice, for those who desire it. Gluten free communion
bread is available upon request. When the bread is passed, simply request the gluten free instead.
While care is taken to keep both bread options separate to eliminate cross-contamination, if you
have a severe gluten allergy, please use your discretion.
There are also designated elders available to pray with you as you have need. If you are not taking
Communion, you may come forward for prayer, or remain seated. We would especially encourage
parents to bring their non-communing children to an elder for a prayer of blessing.
4. Out of the fear and dread of the tomb, Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
Into the joy and light of thy home, Jesus, I come to thee.
Out of the depths of ruin untold, into the peace of thy sheltering fold,
Ever thy glorious face to behold, Jesus, I come to thee.

 You were called to freedom. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the
flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word:
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” And the blessing of God Almighty, the
Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you always.
Amen. Thanks be to God!
