Call: New focused Research Area at Oslo University
Hospital 2016-2020: Antimicrobial Resistance
Application deadline: 2 May 2016
Oslo University Hospital (OUS) has established five focused research areas and will now
extend this initiative by establishing a new focused research area within antimicrobial
resistance (AMR), given the high strategic importance of this field. The initiative is supported
by the OUS/UiO Research Committee and by OUS’ Scientific Advisory Board (SAB). The
initiative aims to strengthen existing milieus in this field and to encourage novel
collaborations to increase the possibility for increased external funding and international
collaboration, including Nordic collaboration and EU-grant applications. In particular,
collaborations with milieus at UiO (the Faculty of Medicine and/or other faculties) as well as
milieus outside OUS/UiO, including The Norwegian Institute of Public
Health/Folkehelseinstituttet, should be explored. Applications will be evaluated by the SAB,
before decision by the OUS’ CEO.
Funding:
Up to 2 mill NOK per year for 5 years in total financed from OUS, for 1-3 projects. See
application form for further information and rules for the use of research grants.
Requirements:
1. The project should be within one or more of the following topics related to
antimicrobial resistance:
a. Therapeutics: The improvement of current antibiotics and the development of
new antibiotics and alternatives for antibiotics.
b. Diagnostics: New and improved diagnostics to stimulate better use of current
antibiotics and support the development and use of new antibiotics and
alternatives to antibiotics.
c. Surveillance: A surveillance programme for AMR and antibiotic use in clinical
settings.
d. Transmission: A better understanding of the transmission mechanisms.
e. Interventions: Studies of preventative or control interventions.
2. Collaboration: Initiatives should preferably involve several research groups with
complementary expertise that together plan to apply for further external funding.
Collaboration with UiO as well as national and international collaboration will be
beneficial.
3. Preparation for external funding: It will be expected that the initiatives lead to
applications for external funding, such as EU grants (Horizon 2020) and thereby create
scientifically robust and sustainable research groups.
4. Support from head of divisions and departments: The participating divisions and
departments are asked to describe how they can support the new initiatives. One
division and department in OUS has to be the main responsible per project application.
Evaluation criteria:

Scientific quality of the research plan:
o Clarity and credibility of the objectives
o Extent that proposed work is ambitious, and is beyond the state of the art
(e.g. ground-breaking objectives, novel concepts and approaches)
o Trans-disciplinary considerations (where relevant);

Research environment:
o Quality and competence of the involved research groups
o Publication record and quality with focus on publications relevant to the call
o Involvement of other divisions and research groups at the university or other
external institutions/hospitals
o Complementarities of the groups
o International standing

Strategic importance for the clinical core activities of the hospital, as well as clinical
excellence and best patient care.
