Speaker –Toastmasters meetings are centered on speakers who have
prepared their speeches based on objectives as outlined in the
Competent Communication (CC) or Advanced Communication (AC)
manuals.
Table Topics Master – The purpose of Table Topics is to have speakers
practice “thinking and speaking on their feet” by responding
extemporaneously for a minute or two on a topic chosen by the Table
Topics Master. The Table Topics Master typically calls on attendees
who do not have an assigned role in the meeting.
General Evaluator –The General Evaluator conducts the Evaluation
portion of the meeting. The GE evaluates the Speech Evaluators, and
anything and everything that takes place throughout the meeting.
Timer – One of the lessons we practice is that of expressing a thought
within a specific time. The Timer keeps track of the time for each
speaker in the meeting. The Timer signals the speaker with green
when qualifying time has been reached; at the mid-point with yellow;
and with a red signal when 30 seconds remain; after that, the speaker
is disqualified.
Speech Evaluator – After every prepared speech, the speaker receives
an evaluation. The speaker’s Evaluator provides an oral and a written
evaluation using the guide for that project in the manual. The purpose
of the evaluation is to help the speaker become a better
communicator. Ideally, the Evaluator should take in to account the
speaker’s skill level, habits, mannerisms and progress, to give positive
and constructive feedback.
Word Master– The Word Master introduces a new word by presenting
a “Word of the Day” to build members’ vocabulary – a word that may
be different from the way participants usually express themselves.
The Word Master counts the number of times this word is used by
speakers at the meeting. Additionally, the Word Master may
comment on the use of grammar and language noted during the
course of the meeting.
As Ah Counter, the Word Master notes the use of words and sounds
used as a crutch or filler by anyone who speaks during the meeting.
Words may be interjections such as “and, well, but, so, you know” and
sounds may be “ah, uh, um, er,” or other non-words used by the
speaker.
Vote Counter—The Vote Counter passes the bowl to gather votes for
speaking roles and also comments for the team of the day. The Vote
Counter announces the winners. The comments are distributed to
individuals at the end of the meeting.
Club Mission Statement: “We provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which
members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater
self-confidence and personal growth.”
