Parent/Student Orientation The parents of prospective B Cur students are invited to the official Welcoming Ceremony of the Faculty of Health Sciences, to be held on Saturday 25th January 2014 at 09:00- 10:30 in the Senate Hall on the North Campus. At this event, the Vice Chancellor will address all first year students and the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences will welcome first year students who are registered for programmes in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Thereafter, refreshments will be served and the B Cur students and parents will stay in the Senate Hall for the Departmental Meet and Greet at 11:00 -12:00. Students and their parents will then have the opportunity to meet the staff of the Department of Nursing Science. Attendance of this orientation session is highly recommended. 2. Registration 2.1. Requirements for registration: The following documents are required to be submitted on the day of registration. Registration will be on the Missionvale campus at the Indoor Sports Centre on Monday 27 January 2014 from 10:30 – 11:30. 1. Two (2) certified copies of your identity document 2. Four (4) ID-photographs with your name written clearly on the back 3. Two (2) certified copies of your matriculation results advice or matriculation certificate. Only students who wrote Grade 12 in 2013 are allowed to present their statement of symbols. 4. Receipt of payment to the SOUTH AFRICAN NURSING COUNCIL (SANC). An amount of R110.00 must be paid into account number EA 95 4275 at the cashier at NMMU (North, South or Missionvale) 5. A completed medical report by a medical practitioner (please find enclosed document) 6. Receipt of Payment of registration fee. This is to be paid at the cashier’s office. These must be handed in at registration. If the student does not have ALL of these documents or receipts, he/she will not be registered (See attached document). 3. How 2 @ NMMU The compulsory academic orientation programme (how2@nmmu) for B Cur first-year students will take place on Thursday 31 January – 8 February 2014 at Missionvale Campus. Please follow the How2 @ NMMU programme guide for activities, dates, times and venues. The programme will include the following information: Difference between school and university Setting goals Study skills Time management University related information – structure, procedures, dates Career Choice Campus tour, Library, Finances, Computer labs You must attend this programme, as this will help familiarise you with University and student life. Timetables and book lists will also be handed out during this session. Students will also meet their lecturers. Please consult the First Year Orientation Guide sent to you by the Admissions Department for more information regarding dates and times. 4. Residence/ Accommodation Students who do not reside in Port Elizabeth may apply for residence accommodation. If you have any queries in this regard, please phone (041) 504 3663/4263/4547. Kindly note that every student is personally responsible for the arrangements to be made with regard to accommodation prior to registration. Please take further note, that acceptance to the B Cur programme does not automatically let you qualify for accommodation. It is therefore the student’s responsibility to plan for their accommodation. Students wishing to reside in the Nurses Homes of the Provincial Hospitals in Port Elizabeth must negotiate with the Hospital Management as soon as possible, as places in the Nurses Homes are extremely sought after. 4.1 Additional expensed for Recess Accommodation Please note that during University Recess periods, B Cur students are expected to perform their Clinical practical hours in various Healthcare Institutions. Please ensure to find out the necessary information regarding costs at the residence you choose to stay at, as this can have additional expense implications. 5. Financial Assistance: 2014 Students must secure their own finances for their studies. Students can contact NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme – 041 504 3182/1242/2514 as an alternative, or any bank for a student loan. 6. Purchasing of Textbooks Details regarding textbooks will be provided by Dr H. Willemse and Mrs S. Jardien-Baboo at the Welcoming ceremony on Saturday 25 January 2014. Please do not purchase any textbooks prior to the Orientation Programme. The estimated cost for textbooks for the first year is R3500, 00 although there is a possibility that some second-hand books may be available. 7. Pregnancy Due to the nature of the clinical practice requirements of the B Cur degree programme, the firstyear female student must provide proof (medical certificate) that she is not pregnant prior to the commencement of the four-year degree programme. This is to safeguard the mother and unborn child from any harm, as well as safeguarding the university from any litigation proceedings in the event of any complications arising due to pregnancy. Students who are already pregnant at the commencement of their training may not continue with the programme. This includes students who are within the six (6) week period after delivery; unless a registered medical practitioner certifies that the student is fit to commence training. 8. Monies Payable Registration fees: These must be paid on, or before the day of registration All students are required to pay this amount in full prior to registration. Registration fees must be paid at the Cashier, NMMU, Missionvale Campus, R5700.00 before arriving at the Indoor Sports Centre in Missionvale to register TOTAL: R5700.00 If you will be staying in the University Residence, you must pay this deposit at the R4 200.00 Residence Fees: Cashier on or before the day of registration TOTAL: Compulsory registration with professional bodies: South African Nursing Council (SANC) This total amount (R110.00) must be paid in at the cashier with the enclosed slip and proof of payment must be brought to registration. R4 200.00 R 110.00 The monies can be paid in cash or a cheque. If paying by cheque, it should be made out to the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. TOTAL: R110.00 9. Transport Students must attend lectures at the NMMU Missionvale Campus. A return shuttle service is provided from South Campus to Missionvale for students residing at university residences. 10. Cancellation of course In the event of you deciding not to continue with the B Cur programme for 2014, you are requested to IMMEDIATELY notify the Department of Nursing Science telephonically on (041) 504 2122 as well as in writing.
