Cleaning up after winter ice storm and snow storms – What about the Refuse and Recycling in bad weather? Tree and Yard debris from the ice storm can be seen across the thumb. Side roads, highways, and local communities have broken limbs everywhere. Carsonville is no exception to this storm damage. When the weather clears enough for residents to clean their yards and bring broken branches and limbs to the curbside we will post notice on our website and on the Village Sign. We will be having the branches chipped by a private contractor with the help of our DPW There will be some requirements as to the size and the length of the debris so please keep you eyes open for the announcement. We will also contact the local radio station as to the date for the clean up. If the cold and snow persist through out the next few months this could be in the spring. Refuse pick up and recycling are another problem we experienced with the recent snow and cold spell. Trash was not picked up on the regular day because of the weather. Since we could not contact Waste Management and had no notice as to when they would pick up we were surprised to see it was the next day. We don’t have anything to do with the setting of trash and recycling so all we can tell you is in the future plan on next day pick up. Recycling will be the next scheduled time which can be found on the village website under refuse. Snow Removal The village DPW will clear snow as fast and as effectively as time and conditions allow. Generally we will follow these guidelines. Streets and safety issues first. After these are clear they will then begin to clean other areas, sidewalks, parking lots and removal of excess snow. Many of the areas the DPW clears, during major storms, may not be cleared immediately. Residents need to understand that the DPW will get to these based on priorities. We do not clear drives or private parking areas unless there is an emergency that needs to be addressed. Thank you 2013 in review – Big events, New Events, – a community effort by many 2013 was a very busy and productive year in our little village. We started with the Council’s decision to reinstate the Tractor Pull, an event that was always part of our village life in the past. With the help of many people within and outside our community it was a great success. The decision to have this event meant we had to remove the old pavilion, in need of too much repair to just renovate, with a new structure. The DPW with the aid of many community volunteers manage to fight the rain and complete the structure on time for the beer tent, band, and tractor pull. This was phase 1 of our pavilion renovation. Check out our goals for 2014 to see phase two. A new roof was added to the old fire hall, now used by our DPW for equipment storage and it still houses our water systems pump house. This should keep the building in good operating shape for a few more years. A fresh coat of paint to the exterior also improved the looks of this old village structure. The community garden experienced its second year. A new electronic sign was added to announce village events, meetings, and general information. If individuals, groups, organizations, or families have events they wish to announce to the community just send a message to the clerk via our website – www.villageofcarsonville.org and we will try to get it up on the sign. Please allow a one-week advance notice. Anniversary, reunions, birthdays, special events your group is sponsoring are all possible items to place on the Village Sign. The VIA, Village Improvement Association, with members from within and without our community organized and conducted Halloween and Winter Holiday home decorating contests and coloring contests. Many thanks to the local businesses who help make these first time events a success. The reorganizing of the Carsonville Firebelles has helped the fire department conduct events like Breakfast with Santa; participation in the Sandusky Area lighted Implement Christmas Parade, and has assisted with other activities. These wonderful ladies give up their time and energy to help our fire department earn funds for equipment. Currently the fire department is saving up to get Jaws of Life equipment and training. New vinyl images were placed on the Fire Department doors with the Carsonville fire patch. On New Year’s Eve we celebrated the bringing in of the new year with a spectacular fireworks display presented by various community donors and the Village, A BIG THANK YOU goes out to the fire department volunteers who conducted the show for us. The ice storm and the bitter cold made the bonfire a bust for this year but there is some kind of relief in knowing our firemen have a harder time starting a fire than putting one out! Donations for next year’s fireworks are always welcomed. 2 1. Tractor Pull - 2 Day Event with new activities added 2. Completing the under ground work on South Main to prepare for the 2016 resurfacing Citizen Involvement Needed to make the Village Improvements and meet Goals If we are going to continue to make our community a place where family and friends matter, we need support from residents in and around the community, continued local business support and community groups to become involved in the ongoing progress. Attending the VIA (Village Improvement Association) meetings, signing up for a garden plot in the Community Garden, reporting vandalism and suspicious activities, adding your cottage industry to our business page, helping to establish a small local market on Saturdays at the Park and just helping to make the village a pleasant place to enjoy life are just a few of the things we need volunteers for.
