Instructors: Balázs Hajgató Assisted by Jean-Sébastien Stoffen and Stéphane Gérard Contact person: Lowie Geers Email address contact person: Doctoral.schools@vub.ac.be VUB postal address contact person: 3M326, Pleinlaan 2, 1050 Elsene Content description activity Short description - Abstract: This introductory course will explain the concepts of high performance and high throughput computing. The computing modes “batch” and interactive” will be presented together with their “environment”. The instructor will show how to execute your code in those different modes. Disk storage and file system explanations are accompanied with how to execute code with input and output data. Finally a few notes about multicore and parallel computing will be added. To ensure that all concepts are understood, the explanations are accompanied by hands-on. These exercises form an integral part of the course and are distributed over the day. Three instructors are available to help out with the hands-on and give extra explanations if needed. Competences: After attending the seminar, participants will be able to use the HYDRA cluster of the VUBULB computing centre and will have a basis for using a similar computing infrastructure elsewhere. Previous knowledge: Basic knowledge of Linux. The course “Linux for beginners” is a good start for those that want to start using high performance computers. Study material: The slides of the course will be made available on paper and electronically. Condition(s) for attribution of credits (e.g. active participation or mode of assessment): Active participation Technical data event: Date: 19 February 2015 From 09:30 - 16:30 including a lunchbreak. Is your laptop a Mac or a PC? Did you use already computers of the VUB computing center? Your VUB username you received when registering at the VUB as a student; Your e-mail address. For the hands-on you will also need an account on the HYDRA cluster, this account will have the same username as specified under (4) in the questions above. Keep in mind that you need to know the password corresponding to this username the day of the course. For the hands-on we will use a remote connection to the main cluster of the computer center, hence your laptop needs to have the corresponding tools installed. We will contact you to ensure that this is the case.
