Few authors have left a more permanent mark on the sociological imagination than French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. Few authors have also been subjected to more partial readings and selective interpretations than the craftsman of the seminal ‘ Distinction ’. While his ideas continue to stimulate research in fields as diverse as the sociology of culture, lifestyle, education and politics, contemporary applications all too often focus on single ideas (social reproduction), isolated concepts (cultural capital) or individual books ( Distinction ).
This workshop is designed to address the analytical potential of Bourdieu’s more overarching framework by presenting recent findings from studies in
Denmark and Norway. It will focus particularly on Bourdieu’s relational approach to sociology and the use of Multiple Correspondence Analysis and other forms of Geometric Data Analysis . However, more than a simple methods-course, this workshop aims to help researchers move from
Bourdieusian theory to Bourdieusian practice by providing hands-on examples that address the conceptual and epistemological underpinnings of his work: What are adequate indicators of cultural, economic and social capital? How does one go about constructing ‘social spaces’? What are pertinent indices of lifestyle, political opinion and moral values? How can one apply Bourdieu outside of the field of cultural sociology?
This workshop is open to doctoral students, researchers and academics who are interested in practical applications of Bourdieusian theory or
Geometric Data Analysis and requires no prior knowledge of either topics.
