Taylor Librarian

Purpose of Job:
Responsible for the day to day running of the Taylor Library. This
includes managing reader services, collection development, systems
management and bibliographic services and advising the Fellow
Librarian on strategic planning of the Library’s development.
Duties & Responsibilities
1.
Providing and developing reader services, assisting students, Fellows, staff and
external researchers with their enquiries either about printed materials or online
resources.
2.
Responsibility for the strategic purchasing and processing of new accessions,
including books, journals and AV materials.
3.
Continual assessment of the bookstock, regularly weeding outdated materials and
identifying gaps in the Library’s holdings.
4.
Liaising with Directors of Studies over individual subject holdings and book
purchases, and checking departmental reading lists against the Library’s current
holdings and dealing efficiently with student recommendations.
5.
Cataloguing and classifying accessions on the Voyager system to full RDA/AACR2
and MARC21 standards in line with the Cambridge bibliographic standard.
6.
Management of the LMS, Voyager, across all modules and including upgrades as
advised by the Libraries@Cambridge team. The Taylor Librarian is also responsible
for the security and the circulation of stock, encompassing the self-service system
(RFID), overdue book reports, and charges.
7.
Management of the Taylor Library budget in liaison with the College Treasurer.
8.
Managing, training and supporting the Assistant Librarian and any volunteers/student
helpers/casual assistants, and assessing future staffing needs.
9.
Responsibility for the development of the use of information technology in the Library
and managing the use of the Library’s AV suite.

10.
Organising and leading library induction tours for new students and updating
borrower records.
11.
Maintaining discipline and ensuring that Library rules are observed by users.
12.
Maintaining the information on the Taylor Library webpage.
13.
Recording statistics of Library use to inform future developments and to provide
statistics for SCONUL.
14.
Annual updating of the student guide to the Library.
15.
Organising the annual stock-check and book moves.
16.
Management of the photocopier and its finances.
17.
Liaising with donors over receipt and transport of gifts.
18.
Responsibility for ordering/cataloguing and general operation of the graduate library
at Leckhampton.
19.
Liaising with the Clerk of Works to ensure the proper maintenance of the library
building and with the Head Housekeeper to ensure the Library is kept clean and fit
for purpose.
20.
Arranging and conducting visits for students, Fellows, Old Members and other
visitors, including some out of hours events.
21.
Acting as principal point of contact in the College for the Corpus Clock, on the
outside of the Library, including liaison with the engineers when and if it requires
servicing.
22.
Overseeing health and safety issues in the Taylor Library.
23.
Managing and reviewing the disaster plan for the Taylor Library.
24.
Continuing professional development, maintaining professional skill-base and
representing the Taylor Library at the Cambridge Colleges Library Forum and other
external meetings.
25.
Assisting in the Parker Library as required and any other duties as may be required
by the Fellow Librarian.
