Peter Woodruff is Professor of Academic Clinical Psychiatry, Director of the Sheffield Cognition
and Neuroimaging Laboratory and Deputy Head of the Department of Neuroscience, University
of Sheffield. He is Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist for Sheffield Health and Social Care Trust.
He completed his medical training in Newcastle Upon Tyne, his psychiatry clinical training at
the Maudsley Hospital, London and gained a PhD in Neuroimaging from King’s College London.
Following research appointments in Medicine as Assistant Professor at Maryland University,
USA and working in Sudan and Egypt (where he described the first case of HIV/AIDS in the
Sudan), he began his research career at the Institute of Psychiatry, London, performing
neuroimaging studies in schizophrenia and other psychiatric conditions. He studied
neuroimaging in the USA, in Baltimore at John Hopkins Hospital, and on a Fulbright Fellowship
to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He previously worked as Senior Lecturer, at the
Institute of Psychiatry, London and Honorary Consultant in Psychiatric Intensive Care,
Maudsley Hospital. He was a scientific advisor to the Finland Academy of Science and served
on the Wellcome Trust Clinical Interview Panel from 2005 – 2009. He is Fellow and Chair of the
Academic Faculty of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. He investigates neuropsychiatric
disorder via the neuroscience of perception & social cognition. He uses neuroimaging to identify
brain networks central to understanding psychosis and its response to treatments.
This event takes place during the Psychiatrists in Training Summer Conference and trainees
who have registered for the Summer Conference need not register again.
