Library News of Note for January-February, 2016
From Judy Haskell:
When you read this, I will have achieved Director emeritus status  I am now in my last week of
leading the Library and anticipating a retirement party that will render me (nearly) speechless!
Let me begin by thanking you from the bottom of my heart for 19.9 years of on-the-job
enjoyment, and know that there will be a giant hole in my universe when I leave on Dec. 18th. But
I’ll keep showing up like a bad penny, so I won’t be a stranger and if you want to reach out to
me, my phone number is in the book.
We would be remiss to start the New Year without remembering those who made 2015 a most

INTRODUCTION
I have had the pleasure of meeting many of you already. For the past year and a half, I have been
working at the Hampton Falls Free Library. Previously, I have worked in a number of libraries in New
Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Most recently, I have served as a Library Director in a small,
rural library in central Pennsylvania. Of all the places I have worked, Hampton Falls is the warmest and
friendliest. I hope to continue the welcoming attitude that Judy has developed. I am always happy to
recommend a new book or author and of course, I can help locate that obscure quote, consumer article or
pesky IRS form. I would also like to express my appreciation to the Library Board for their confidence in
me and for all the folks who have offered such kind words of support and encouragement. Please stop in
and say hello. I look forward to meeting more of you…. Barbara Tosiano

WHAT WE’RE READING
On Tuesday, Jan. 26th at 7:00 pm our Adult Book Discussion group will discuss Dead Wake:
The Last Crossing of the Lusitania by Erik Larson. We all know, or think we know the tragic story of
the Lusitania, a passenger ship that was torpedoed by a German U-Boat whose sinking led to the United
States’ entry into the First World War. With his usual meticulous research, Erik Larson debunks most of
what we remember from high school history. Erik Larson is the author of Devil in the White City and In
the Garden of Beasts as well as several other acclaimed non-fiction works.
Moving on to February 23rd at 7:00 pm, we will be discussing Lily King’s Euphoria, a New
York Times Bestseller, Winner of the 2014 Kirkus Prize and Winner of the 2014 New England Book
Award for Fiction. Based on the life of anthropologist Margaret Meade, the book deals with the
relationships, both professional and personal among three anthropologists studying tribes in New
Guinea. Amazon calls this book, “The best kind of historical novel—the kind that sent me
running to read about its real-life inspiration.”
FEBRUARY 16th PROGRAM
In recognition of Black History Month, Deborah Knowlton, pastor of the First
Congregational Church in Hampton, will be speaking at the Library on February 16th at 6:30 pm
on her newly published book, Color Me, Included. Born of research for the church’s 375th
anniversary of founding, the book tells the stories of African Americans who were members of
the Congregational Church in the 18th century. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the
Hampton Falls Free Library.
ART EXHIBITS
During 2015, the Library has been privileged to display the artwork of three local artists.
We have received many positive comments on the art on display. If there more artists out there
who would like to display artwork on the Library walls, please let us know.
CANDIDATES NIGHT
The Library will host its 10th annual “Meet the Candidates” night on Wednesday,
February 10th from 6:30 to 7:45 pm. This offers the perfect opportunity to talk with the
people running for elected office in Hampton Falls so you can make an informed decision at the
Polls on March 8th.
WEATHER OR NOT
Last year’s record setting winter is still a painful memory for most of us. Should the
Library need to close due to inclement weather (and we do get our share in New England!), you
can check WMUR’s storm closure alert. The station will list closings at 15 and 45 minutes past
the hour. In addition, closings are listed on www.wmur.com and the Library’s website
www.hamptonfallslibrary.org.
PARTING THOUGHT
“Year’s end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience
can instill in us.” Hal Borland
Yours truly,
