I Session 4 solution Q1. What are identity theft, Phishing, pharming, adware, keylogging & DDOS..? How can you protect yourself from some of these? Please read the postings and book. Good answers are posted. Q2. Social networking sites like (youtube, facebook, etc..) are becoming massive 24/7 information sharing medium. This has some negative consequences, for example friends videotaping and posting the information on youtube has led to suicides, Rutgers example, student posting their thesis online Duke student's thesis example. Discuss the ethics of information sharing by applying figure 8.1/229 and concepts of information sharing with responsibility (page 85) All six principles can be studied as follows. considerations Consequence Society’s opinion Likelihood of effect Time to Consequence Relatedness Reach of Result Extreme harm as is evidenced by the death of subjects in the videos. In general, it could have unintended serious consequences resulting in privacy violation and harm to individuals. In general, society will not like privacy violation Probability is high..that action could result in personal harm Instant due to the nature of the Internet Typically, it is somebody known At least the subject, in addition their family and friends. if the posting includes other people, it will harm them also It appears to be serious ethical violation to post information sharing on social networking sites when the consequences can be lethal and harmful and it is shared without the consent of the subject. some interesting postings from the CONFERENCE: The sharing of information can range on a scale of ethicality (like that on page 229). It fall anywhere from minor to very serious and each person who makes those posts on those websites has to make that call for themselves, When it comes to publicizing information, you have to ask yourself how upset you would be if someone were to post information about you for everyone to see. Would they be hurt? Mad? Amused? I think that may be a good way to judge the ethics involved with these social networking sites….try to put yourself in the other person’s shoes and see how it would feel if you were being victimized. Everyone needs to be responsible enough to know what’s right and what’s wrong. And if you can’t be your own judge then you probably shouldn’t be using these sites…or the internet at all for that matter. Not a whole lot needs to be said reguarding the tragedy's that have resulting the postings on Facebook and Youtube. I never used Facebook nor Youtube so I lack much knowledge for this discussion. In regards to netiquette on the two website's, you just have to watch what you post. Things that are humorous to some may be very disturbing to others. Always revise your posts with your emotional wellbeing and say to yourself "is this appropriate?" "Will this effect my job at work, or perhaps get me fired?" "Is this embarrassing to myself and my family?" "Will this ruin reputations of others?"....What it all boils down to is please use your best common sense! Q3 read book and forum Q4. making a replica…..(see fig 4.4/p94) Taking office property can not be justified both on legal or ethical grounds. This violates the both principles. It violates all principles and creates bad consequences for everybody. Every decision making situation has at least two dimensions.. ETHICS and LEGAL LEGAL ILLLEGAL Ethics X Unethical XX Within this frame of reference, we would place taking furniture and office supplies as both illegal and unethical (XX) However, if the employee is involved in telecommuting and is authorized by employer to take property at home then it would be both ethical and legal, if it used for office work only. Within this frame of reference, we would place taking furniture and office supplies as both legal and ethical (X)
