Recycled products in pavement construction video transcript Voiceover VicRoads accredited recycled products for pavement construction provide an opportunity for councils to better manage the future costs of pavement maintenance and construction and achieve stronger environmental benefits. The quality and performance of recycled crushed concrete, brick, asphalt, glass fines and crumbed rubber products are equivalent to traditional virgin aggregate and sand. Arul Arulrajah, Geotechnical Engineering, Swinburne University of Technology The recycled products have been evaluated in the laboratory. They've been evaluated in the field. They've been shown to be equivalent and at times even better than of a typical virgin material. Agnelo Duarte, Director Technical Services, VicRoads The use of recycled products is more than just talk. It's about action. We have utilised these materials on some of our highest-profile projects. Projects like the M80, Hallam bypass and the Dingley bypass. To ensure recycled products are of the highest quality VicRoads undertakes lab testing, in-situ testing, has developed an integrated specification and has accredited sites as well as products. Wayne Mack, Manager Roads and Construction, City of Casey We've really noticed no difference in maintenance between the recycled products and the raw material products. So much so that we couldn’t even tell where they were placed if you're just looking at the roads. James Edmond, Infrastructure Planning and Works Coordinator, City of Stonnington We are very confident in using this product and we intend to use it on all our future projects. We are not even giving the contractor a choice. We're just going to specify recycled crushed concrete in our standard drawings and our specifications. Andrew Kovacs, Environmental Engineer, Melbourne International RoRo Automotive Terminal, Leighton Contractors Pty Ltd So here at webb dock we have used over 240,000 tonnes of recycled material. We've used a variety of pavement materials. Everything from class 4, class 3, class 2 all recycled brick, concrete and glass. We've found across the project that we've had huge program savings. We’re not affected by wet weather as much and its really helped our program along. Wayne Mack, City of Casey We've only got a finite amount of resources and there's really no difference in the performance between the raw materials and the recycled products. So, go for it. Voiceover There is a viable business case for councils to use local recycled products in pavement construction based on the criteria of quality price and availability.
