Chapter 4
How does the Create New Page Size command differ from the Page Setup command?
When you create a new page size, a new thumbnail will appear in the New template gallery every time you start
Publisher, which allows you to reuse the page size for other publications. Page Setup affects only the current
publication.
Is there any easier way to replace the text in consecutive boxes?
In most dialog boxes, you can press the tab key, which will move the insertion point to the next box and select the
text at the same time.
Where will the custom layout be saved?
The layout will appear in the New template gallery when you first start Publisher, or when you click New in the
Backstage view. To view custom sizes, click the More Blank Page Sizes thumbnail.
What is the default color scheme?
Typical installations use Office as the default color scheme.
What if I do not enter a name for the modified color scheme?
Publisher assigns a name that begins with the letters, Custom, followed by a number (i.e., Custom 8).
What colors are displayed when you click the New box arrow?
Publisher presents 40 of the common printing colors for desktop printers in a small gallery or palette. You can click
the More Colors command in the gallery to display the Colors dialog box, where you can choose other colors,
create your own colors by entering color numbers, or choose a publishing color system, such as Pantone, a
popular color system for professional printing.
Can I delete a color scheme once I create it?
Yes. To delete a color scheme, first display the list of color schemes, and then right-click the custom color scheme.
Click Delete Scheme on the shortcut menu.
Where is the new color scheme stored?
Each color scheme that you create will appear at the top of the gallery, alphabetized by name (shown in Figure 4 –
11).

What does Free Rotate mean?
The Free Rotate command places green rotation handles on each of the four corners of a selected object. As you
drag a rotation handle, the graphic rotates while keeping the center of the graphic in the same place on the page.
Pressing the ctrl key while you rotate a corner handle keeps the opposite corner in the same place on the page and
rotates around it.
How do you use the other commands in the list?
The Fit command places the entire, original graphic within the cropping handle dimensions, even if that means
creating a disproportional image. The Fill command places the original graphic within the cropping handles
maintaining proportions, which sometimes means a slight cropping occurs if the cropping handle dimensions are
not the same shape as the original. The Clear Crop command resets the graphic to its original size and dimension
with no cropping. The commands become enabled after an initial crop.

How do you use the other commands in the list?
The other Wrap Text commands allow you to wrap text around pictures in a variety of ways depending on your
needs. You will learn more about wrapping text around pictures in a later chapter.
Do all pictures display wrap points around the edges of the objects?
Pictures that have a white fill in the background display wrap points only at the four corners. Pictures with a
transparent background display many wrap points around the outer edges of the objects in the picture.
What if I make a mistake?
If you drag too far or to an incorrect position, you can fix the problem by dragging the wrapping point to a new
location — even farther away from the graphic, if you like. To delete a wrapping point, ctrl+click the wrapping point.
How do I insert and delete extra wrap points?
Clicking or dragging the red line creates wrap points. You can ctrl+click a wrap point to delete it.
Why do I need to remove the white space if it does not appear when the document is printed?
Later in the chapter, if you have extra white space, the graphic will not be centered when this graphic is placed
inside a shape.
What does the More Colors command do?
The More Colors command displays the same Colors dialog box, as it did when you chose a color for the color
scheme, allowing you to choose colors based on a color number, palette, or coloring system.
Do I have to choose a scheme color?
No, you do not have to choose a scheme color, but using scheme colors provides consistency in your publication.
What is the PNG Portable Network Graphics Format?
PNG is the default format for saving graphics from within Publisher publications. PNG is a graphic file format
supported by most Web browsers. PNG files are compressed bitmap files that support variable transparency of
images and brightness on different computers. You can save the graphic in other formats by clicking the ‘Save as
type’ box arrow (Save As dialog box) and then choosing a format in the list.
Why is my gallery different?
Publisher displays the most recently used shapes at the top of the gallery. The recently used shapes on your
computer will differ.
How would I create a perfect square?
SHIFT+dragging maintains the proportions of any shape. If you SHIFT+drag the rectangle shape, it will create a
square; to create a circle, you can SHIFT+drag an oval.
What is the purpose of the Transparency sliders?
When you choose one color for your gradient, the Transparency sliders allow you to specify what percentage of
transparency, or opacity, for the beginning and end of the gradient. A 100% transparency appears white. A 0%
transparency displays the chosen color.
What other elements can I fill with effects?
You can fill text boxes, master pages, Web page backgrounds, tables, pictures, and WordArt with gradients,
texture, patterns, pictures, or tints/shades.
Can I create an object with no border at all?
Yes. Select the object, click the Shape Outline button arrow, and then place a check mark in the No Outline check
box.
How do you use the Sample Line color command?
When you click the Sample Line color command, Publisher allows you to select the color from anywhere in the
page layout by clicking the desired color. The color is added to the color palette and you then can apply the new
color to a font, line, or fill. When sampling a color, the mouse pointer displays an eyedropper as if it were picking up
or suctioning the color from the display.
What is the difference between saving as a picture and saving to the Building Block Library?
Saving as a picture saves a copy on your storage device, which may be unavailable to other users. Saving to the
Building Block Library keeps a copy within Publisher, for all users of the computer.
