Course Description: The primary goal of this course is to help you develop theoretical and
empirical knowledge and the critical analytical skills needed to make sense of international
migration. Through lectures, discussions, readings, and written assignments, you will have the
opportunity to consider a wide range of developments regarding international migration
throughout the centuries. The course provides a study of some of the main issues related to
migration and asylum policies of different countries and regions. We will also study on the
works of some international organizations (such as UNHCR and IOM).

The reading load is not heavy, but it is essential that you keep up with
assignments, as the lectures and discussion will assume a familiarity with the content of this
course.
Keeping Informed: To facilitate your knowledge of international migartion, its causes and
results, its types and modifications you should also make it practice to read a high-quality,
internationally oriented news sources on a regular basis. The web-page of the UNHCR; IOM
and the EU (europa) may provide you a large span of e-documents and sources of
information. You can also follow documentary programs and news on public and private Tv
channels such as NTV, CNN Int., BBC World.
Course Expectation and Evaluation: As instructors, we have a responsibility to come to class
prepared, to be accessible when you have questions, and to provide you with feedback on
your performance. This is a two-way syreet, however. We expect you to attend lectures and
discussion sections mentally prepared by having read the assigned material. Make-up exams
will be granted only with authoritative written evidence of illness.
