CAS CONSULTANTS PROJECT PROPOSAL
Project Title:
Plastic Recycling Scheme
Proposed by:
Nana Arikawa (12 Ruby) and Vernetta Yeong (12 Pearl)
Goal:
Environmental goal for this project is to reduce plastic bottles thrown into the garbage
cans, and to recycle as many plastic bottles as possible. Students need to find a recycling
company to bring bottles for recycle, and should be able to communicate with them in
Chinese (Mandarin). The other goal is to come up with decorative recycled ‘light bulb’
that can be hanged in the canteen, therefore some art skills needed by the students in
charging this part. Overall expectation is to save the environment by increasing
recycling and reducing global warming.
Target Audience:
SSIS senior school students.
Duration:
3 months: starting as soon as the school approves the proposal.
Venue:
The collecting process of the empty plastic bottles will be in school but half of the bottles
would be sold to recycling company outside of the school.
Description of the Project:
As an effort to reduce the amount of wastage and to beautify the school, an idea would be
made to encourage students to recycle and to keep the school clean. Recycling bins that are
already in place at the school will be put near the canteen and at every floor for students to
dispose of their plastic water bottles. Half of the recycled water bottles collected will be
handed over to the recycling company in exchange for money. As an incentive, each bottle
should have the donator’s name written on it as a form of a lucky draw. At the end of the
project, the lucky winner will stand a chance to win the collected money from the recycled
bottles (received from the recycling company). The other half will be used as ornaments for
an art piece done by at least two students. This can be handed over to another group of
students as a new project or be continued from the previous one. Using the bottles, two fairy
lights will be bought and stringed through the bottles making a recycled ‘light bulb’ to be
placed around the canteen and around corridors for use during lunch hours. This will remind
students that no matter how redundant an object may seem to be, it will always have a
meaning to it.
The purpose is to reduce greenhouse gas emission to the atmosphere, decrease the global
warming, since it’s always considered as a world wide environmental problem. Also it is
important to raise students’ awareness of recycling non-biodegradable stuffs at the same time.
CAS Outcomes:





Global value: by understanding the worldwide environmental problem of greenhouse
effect and global warming as in terms of recycling.
Commitment: by continuing this activity for more than three months.
New challenge: Present to students during assembly (if you have not done before.)
Making up the recycled plastic bottle ‘light bulb’.
Collaboration: to present, to organize, to carry out, to make, etc., every steps in this
project needs collaborating and communication with team mates.
Raise awareness: Present in the assembly (only when you have done it before.)
Volunteer requirement:
People running this project should have basic Chinese communication skills as he or she
would have to contact the recycling company(ies) outside of the school. The volunteers can
be from any grade in senior school, as long as they are responsible to check on their projects
regularly. It is important that the volunteers have perseverance to run this project for 3
months. All students would be encouraged to recycle the bottles. For the people who have not
joined environment-related project, this would be a great chance for them to fulfill the CAS
outcome, which is new challenge. For the people who have joined the environment-related
projects before, this chance will provide them with opportunities to fulfill CAS outcome,
which is raise awareness.
