WHOLE SCHOOL APPROACH AWARD – ENTRY GUIDELINES
One Team, One Goal: Celebrating Diversity is a partnership between the AFL and the Victorian Government.
The objective of the competition is to encourage positive discussions in schools about diversity and to promote
intercultural understanding and respect amongst school communities by:
 giving students the opportunity to engage with/interpret the topic of cultural diversity and racism in a
positive way through creative expression
 supporting schools to use the competition as a platform to engage the entire school community on the
topic of intercultural understanding
 encouraging teachers to include the topic of intercultural understanding in their classes and accessing
the many resources available online to support their teaching.
Schools are invited to apply for an award on the basis of their school’s participation in the competition and
demonstrated whole-school commitment to diversity.
Entries for the whole school award must be completed by a member of the school’s leadership team. The
entry should be in the form of a statement addressing:
 why and how the school leadership team encouraged teachers and students to participate in the
competition
 how the school engages with the whole school community in recognising and celebrating diversity
 how the school will continue to embrace diversity and engage with, explore and develop intercultural
understanding within the school community.
At least one student from the school must have submitted an entry to the competition for the school to be
eligible to apply for the whole school award. Only one entry per school is permitted in the Whole School
Award stream. Students can submit more than one entry in the student stream.

Prizes
There will be one winning primary school and one winning secondary school. Entries from primary/secondary
combined schools, special schools and language schools will be considered in both categories. The winning
schools will receive:
 a $2500 grant to support intercultural understanding activities
 a certificate signed by the Deputy Premier and representative of the AFL
 an invitation to a ceremony during the week leading up to Multicultural Round to be presented
certificates
 a professional learning activity focused on intercultural understanding for teachers at the Immigration
Museum
 50 tickets for use by the school at a Multicultural Round football match.

Judging criteria and process
Whole school award entries will be judged on the basis of their demonstration of commitment, current actions
and planned actions to embrace and leverage diversity and to develop intercultural understanding within the
school community and across domains such as curriculum, policy development, school strategic and workforce
planning, programs to combat prejudice and discrimination, student wellbeing, parent and community
engagement.
A judging panel of DET representatives will determine the winning entries. Winners will be contacted by
telephone and/or email prior to being listed on the Department of Education and Training website from the end of
July 2015.
